Small crash - should I make him pay?

    Hi,
I'm only learning to drive and yesterday someone crashed into me. It was his fault and him and the cyclist who seen it said it was.

Anyway there is only a small mark on the bumper and its only an 98 Astra.
Does anyone know how much it would cost to get it sprayed as if it costs much I think I will just leave it as he is going to pay himself rather than go through insurance.

So any idea how much it would cost it re spray a bumper?

If there isn't any dents on it, might be anything between 200 - 350 euro.
That's the price I got from 5 different garages in Mayo few months ago.

If it's only a small mark does it really matter?

    try and buff it out

i clipped a bumper reversing a few weeks ago

owner of the car went to a garage and got quoted 300euro

i asked him would he go to a garage of my choice, just for a quote, and he agreed. he drove out of the garage 5 minutes later completely happy with the scratch buffed out and they didn't charge me anything cause it was so minor.

i know this wasnt your fault but you still shouldnt let garages away with extortionate quotes for tiny jobs

He actually owned a garage himself but didn't do spraying. He brought it back and tried to buff it out but the paint was gone too deep and way to thick.

So he said that he was willing to bring it to another Garage and get it sprayed. He was going to collect it from me and get it done so I wouldnt be dealing with the Garage but I still dont want him paying a lot for something that will prob be scraped all over anyway soon as Im only learning.

I think €300 is way too much to pay for that so I may just leave it.

Does he seem like a decent guy? If so, and if the scratch doesn't bother you then how about offering something like €100 to call it quits?

You're being very decent. If it's not going to bother you then leave it be

My own car was recently hit in the car park where I live, rear quarter and bumper damaged. The driver did a runner but I was relentless and found out who it was. We've agreed on a date when she's going to give me the money and I'm not going to budge, if I don't have it on that date I'll be making an insurance claim. How anybody could drive into a car then drive away is beyond me. If she had told me at the time I'd be far more reasonable

I'd be somewhat apprehensive about giving my car to a stranger like that no matter how sound a guy he may seem but I suppose everybody would view that differently.

300 quid is a lot of loot to be paying to fix up a scraped bumper on a 1998 Astra. I'd find it hard to justify so can see where your coming from there. If it was a half common colour I'd imagine there would be a fair chance you could find one in a breakers yard for a hell of a lot less. Let the other guy pick up the bill of course.

Fair play to the OP for even thinking about leaving it. If I was in the same position, 13 year old car and a minor scratch I would leave it, Karma and all that. OP you say he has a garage himself, next time your due a service, give him a call, he might give you a discount....;)

Its not at all common. Its a weird light blue but I havnt seen any others with the same colour.

Well I know where the garage is that he owns as he brought ut to it. So I doubt that he would try anything

Not a bad idea, tell him you'll leave it off but you might call in for an oil change some day as a favour!

If you're anywhere near Cork, there's a guy on Boards called PaintDoctor and his Facebook site has some pictures of nice repairs he's done for relatively little money. Maybe worth a shot.

If you're inclined to leave it, which would be a very decent gesture, make sure you quickly get some primer put on any exposed metal, or it'll be the start of rust for you.

You can get a reasonable repair done quite cheaply now, see this recent enough thread on SMART repairs in Dublin.

I had some work done by John @ carmedic also and got good results also at reasonable cost and with excellent service.

    Facebook for him here

Really like your attitude, There are some people out there that would be screaming neck pain and demanding new bumpers and professional resprays. Its nice to see there are still some decent people driving out there, best of luck with you test when you do it.

I dont seem to be having much luck with this car. I came out of school today and my mirror and been knocked off. The whole thing smashed to pieces up the road a bit. And a small scrape on the side.

Any idea how much its going to cost to get a whole new mirror?

    Manual: http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=894382&pk=4C2C9 €59.50

    Electric: http://www.micksgarage.ie/proddetails.aspx?pid=894384&pk=315B3 €89.50

These are for the 1998-2004 model but there are other prices for the 1991-1998 model :)
