Anti intellectualism in Ireland

Hello I am currently writing my thesis on anti intellectualism in modern Ireland and its impact on our perception of ourselves. I am at present focusing my thesis on the attacks on Bertie Ahern in the media a few years ago. Now, as you may well know Bertie has written many books and is also a journalist, hence you could say that he is a literary sort. And I believe that part of the fact that Bertie comes across as an intellectual may have led to more attacks on him.

Do we in Ireland give credit to our intellectuals, whether they be Ahern, Beckett or Joyce, or do we just ignore them and try to take them down?

I don't think its just intellectuals, I think its if you show any sort of intelligence. Its a society thing, even from childhood people are scared to show intelligence because they will be slagged or bullied. And it keeps going. Jealousy is an awful thing. Putting people down for being smarter than average. It really annoys me. I doubt I'm adding anything to this or helping you at all but it really gets me when people put you down for using 'big' words rather than talking like an absolute dunce. Lke I dnt fink I shud b put dwn 4 nt wntin 2 tlk lke dis.

    Obvious troll is obvious.

    Literary sort???

    :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Focus on a real intellectual, like somewone who actually did get a bit of flack for being outwardly intelligent.

But Ahern is a lowlife weasel, he is hated for that, not for his intellect.

Bertie Ahern appeared in a cupboard for News of the world. He is not a journalist.

If Bertie Ahern was hated due to the size of his intellect then he wouldn't be hated at all.

Bertie Aherne is about as much a literary intellectual as his daughter Cecelia is.

Bertie was fairly anti intellectual irc he had no time for academic theorizations on politics and the economy or had little respect for academia in general. He was the archetypal cute hooer who was grounded in practical reality, disinterested in reflective and critical approaches to existing socio historical circumstances.

A clear troll. Having one post so far too :D
But speaking of the post, its real poncey to say "do we give credit to our intellectuals"
Met a few people in my time who classed themself as "intellectual" - alot had a stuck up smugness about themselves. Like if they were to over hear people talking about the new action movie thats out in the cinemas they would get a superiority attitude thinking such people are beneath them.

"batman? a man dressed as a bat? gastly fools." :pac:

That may have been lost in translation. He has told many "stories", but I don't think he has written any books.

Guy who writes about Soccer (for any paper) is no intellectual.

I'm surprised you failed to mention that he's a University Professor.
