    Hi,
I'm a male that has been considering undergoing a sex change surgery for some time now.

Does anybody know what the procedures are for it here in Ireland? Is it better to go abroad? And do you have to dress like a woman for a certain length of time before hand?

I dont want to go out in public as a man dressed in woman because it will obviously attract negative attention.

Especially here in this small minded country. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Barlett ;)

I think your first port of call should be the LGBT forum here

About your questions, how one goes about transitioning from male to female is far, far more than just surgery, which sadly the impression given by media is often that it's just a surgical change. If you wanted to transition, what would happen is that you'd see a mental health professional for some time, get a diagnosis and a referral to an endocrinologist, where you would begin Hormone Replacement Therapy.

Hormones are what shape your body, and once you begin Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), your body will change significantly. this is one example:

to be referred for surgery, you need to be living full time as a woman for a certain amount of time, have undergone HRT, and have 2 referrals from mental health professionals. it's not an easy route.

you wouldn't be required to dress as a woman in public before HRT, so it would be up to you when you wanted to start living full time. but with breast growth, changes in musculature, body fat redistribution, and loads of other physical changes, you could start to look female even in mens jeans and shirts. have a look at my thread this is what the transition looks like when a boy becomes a girl for more examples of how much the body can change with HRT.

    hope that helps ;)
