Can you get points on an english licence?

Hey, so my Dad just got his first speeding offence yesterday.

He was 60 a few weeks ago, bless him, it ruined his day when he got the letter

yes he was wrong no argument there but he was going well with his clean licence

He was caught by the van, (not an accident black spot but anyway) :rolleyes: They sent a picture of the reg plate and all. Anyway my question is, he has an english licence so can they give him the 2 points?

Oh and also aren't they supposed to have a sign up to tell you there is a speed camera ahead?

There are "covert" speed traps aswell as the ones done by the "Safety Cameras" in black spots.

He cant get points on his English licence in the Republic. All they will do is fine him and say that points have been added to his record but thats not his licence, so no need to inform insurance company etc etc

Where he got caught is on the map for the vans though, but there has never been an accident there :rolleyes:

Have they, both the irish and uk government not brought this in recently already, that you will get points.

That was about driving bans. Not points.

they create a ghost license and the points go on that. Im sure they would take further action for a persistant offender. In the meanwhile the ol'boy should just pay the fine and forget it.

What kind of action they could take for persistant offender?

He has to pay the fine anyway but I was wondering will he actually get the points?

You already got an answer.
He won't.

Only if he in future will swap his licence to Irish licence, then he will get a brand new licence with points on them already.
But he won't get any points on UK licence.

I've got an English licence, got caught speeding last autumn. They can't put points on a licence that is out of their juristriction so your dad won't get any points, just the fine. I just paid the fine. They say they are going to do something to tighten up the loophole but I think it's not as straightforward as that.

I got caught for speeding in Merseyside. I had to give details of my Irish driving licence, and was advised that although they cannot put points on my licence any points incurred are totted up. In the event that I committed sufficient offences to warrant a UK driving ban would result in my being liable to being banned from driving in UK. Presumably that would only occur if they had reason to stop me for another motoring offence. There was also a £60 fine.

4 years older than me....:D no he wont get the points in any real sense..hs license will still be clean

Indeed, they would only be able ban you from driving in the UK, as it their right, but your Irish licence will remain unaffected. The mutual recognition agreement between Ireland and the UK only applies to driving bans issued by a court and not to bans obtained via penalty points, therefore you would be free to drive in Ireland and anywhere else that accepts an Irish license, except UK territory of course.
