Issue with employer

    I work a night shift for a distribution company. When I was driving to work yesterday I got a phone call from the guards to come down and make a statement over a robbery over a month ago. I had no knowledge of anything ever happening. So I was suprised to hear this and angry as i have never been inside a garda station in my life. Even though i wasn't blamed i was disapointed that my employer could not infom me that they handed details of me to garda without my permission. When I got to work they really didnt care and could not see why I was angry. Do you think I should put up and shut up or go further??

    Go further with what? It's just a witness statement. They probably gave the gardai all employee details.

    You have nothing to go further with.

    Under your contract of employment you owe your employer a duty of loyalty and fidelity. This incorporates assisting with the investigation of this robbery (noting that there is absolutely no suggestion of you being involved) and your employer is entitled to presume that you would have no difficulty furnishing a statement to the gardai.

    On a personal level would you not be of the view that you have no cause to be concerned whatsoever over being contacted by gardai and asked for a statement ? It is perhaps the most innocuous query from the gardai possible in connection with the incident ?

    Isn't it true that the privacy afforded by Data Protection does not apply if the personal data is required for investigating a crime? If so, then OP's permission was not required?
