Synchronizing cows

    Hi all,

My father and I are new to the Pedigree Breeding scene. We decided to breed Pedigree Charolais.

We are in our 3rd season and have "eventually" started a system of all cows calving Jan/Feb.System introduced on my part after many an argument..:D

Year 1 - We used AI / Stock bull calving spread 6months.
    - 5 calves

Year 2 - We used AI / Stock bull calving spread 6months.
    - 12 calves

Year 3 - Stock bull cows only calved Jan / Feb only 4 left due in next few days.
    - 15 calves (so far)

We aim to use AI on few select cows and rest for Stock Bull this year. We aim to start this 1st April this will mean calving roughly 10th Jan on.

I really want to tighten up on the calving spread.

Estramate? CIDIR's? will the cows hold roughly 8-10 weeks after calving?

Is the calving season going to be pushed out now?

    Cheers

keep a note of any heat noticed from now on , then you will have an idea of any cows not coming in heat, get those ones handled and work from that

Coming close to the time when we want to start AI and letting the bull to them. should we consider injecting?

Calfs will be at foot and someone had mentioned that injecting can affect calfs?

    Any truth in it?

never heard that... only inject the ones that havent been in heat , but in truth you are wasting your money if you are just injecting them as they might be dirty etc , best to get vet/ scanner to check them out that all is a1

    Good advice there from Whealan1.

Record all heats on a simple excel. That way when it comes to AI time you'll know day by day which one's should be coming around.

I'd recommend a vasectomised bull with chin ball for 2 reasons. 1st is he'll stimulate them to come bulling, and 2nd he'll pick out the ones that are bulling (It's notoriously hard to spot sucklers bulling unless you're living in the shed/ field with them!). You don't want your stock bull doing this, at least not until April 1st!

Then get your vet to look at any you haven't seen bulling 2/3 weeks before breeding starts i.e. 11th March. You don't want to be messing with them yourself. God only knows why they haven't come bulling, but for the most of them I'd guess they just need some hormonal stimulation to get them going;)

    Hi all,

We are in our 3rd season
maybe a bit un related however
just recently bought a charlois bull in a private sale just wondering when you have sold bulls in the past do you sell them as proven ie fertile what happens if you sell a bull and he proves in fertile would you take them back, or generally what is the trend ?my bull is 16 months /E1500

It's my opinion that it is difficult and expensive to secure a Charolais bull of suitable quality to run with a pedigree herd.
You need'nt be going with a couple of grand in your pocket!

It is the risk you take. If the bull is sold unproven the buyer is taking the risk.

For example we have discovered 2-3 possible barren maiden heifers this year. We bought them last year put them out with stock bull and by the looks of things no calfs will be appearing. They will be for the factory in due course.

On the point of the bull you purchased. E1500 is pricey enough for the grade and traits he has on the ICBF sheets.

But maybe he will produce great calfs. You just never know until D-Day comes along.

would you not scan them so you will know , you are wasting time and money each day they are not incalf , the day of waiting for animals to spring up is long gone

There is no money to be made selling a ped Charolais bull for €1500.
A good crossbred bull at the same age would make the guts of it.

    I agree.

Luckily we are managing to get a good enough price for our bulls.

Next June we will have a nice crop.

thats why he is cheap at 1500 as he is nearly worth that for hamburgers if he does not work out i will know in 3 weeks
