A family member wants to buy a brand new golf which are offering €3,200 scrappage however her car is prob worth about €5,000. My car is only fit for scrappage so Ideally we would like to use my car as the scrappage and she sell me hers for about €2000 so she still gets over €5000 off her new golf when you combine my €2000 i pay her and the € 3200 scrappage and i get a great deal on her old car, so everyones a winner. However how does the ownership of cars work? do i have to transfer my car into her name and how do I do that etc? Thanks a mill!

as far as i know for scrappage deal the car being scrapped has to be in the name of the person trading it in for at least a year also has to be taxed and nct'd but i stand to be corrected

You will have to buy the new car in your name to avail of scrappage then sell it to other family member as the car being scrapped must be owned for 18 months or 1 year - cant remember which

Would you not just look it up on the revenue.ie site and get the answer yourself. Some people are so lazy.

If you have nothing to add to the topic please just refrain from posting. Personal abuse is against the charter.

Surely Boards would be a very pointless site if noone helped each other out? Isn't that the idea of it? Fool.

This is the only solution Musicman2011, there's no other way to do it.
The car will have one previous registered owner (you) before your relative gets the car but I doubt he/she will mind.

right so it is do-able but in round about way....

the rule is to qualify for scrappage , car has to have been registered in new car buyers name for the last 18 months

not sure about the nct and road tax bit....

you could get the new car by scrapping the old one... but it will have to be in name of owner of car being scrapped.... then the new car can be signed over to whoever wants it immediately, only snag is the car will now have history of two owners .....

    Just to clarify,

the previously mentioned rules regarding the car being scrapped only apply to the Government Scrappage Scheme which will give you up to €1250 off the VRT. These rules are listed at http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/faqs-scrappage-scheme.html.

The discount you're getting from the dealer will probably be a combination of the government scheme and a dealer/manufacturer discount or trade-in. However, if the discount is funded entirely a dealer/manufacturer then the Revenue rules don't apply.
