ROAD TAX

    I had a classic car years ago and I remember the road tax going down to a nominal figure once it became a classic.

    QUESTIONS ;

    1. What is the current definition of a "classic car" in terms of age for road tax purposes ?

    2. Does road tax reduce once a car qualifies as a classic ?

    3. Classic cars are exempt from the NCT. However, does a car which is not yet a classic and subject to NCT become exempt from NCT once it becomes a classic for road tax purposes ?

    Actually, the answer to this is no...

    A car which is not yet a classic and subject to NCT does not become exempt from NCT once it becomes a classic for road tax purposes.

    The NCT exemption has been date-fixed - any car registered after 31/12/1979 will always be subject to an annual NCT.

    e.g. I have a 1983 car. In two years or so (fingers crossed) it will qualify for classic tax.
    However because it was registered after 31/12/1979 it will always have to do an NCT.

    I'll just add that "registered", is defined in this case as first registration date, worldwide. And in the case of an unregistered vehicle/vehicle with no paperwork where documentary evidence exists to prove the year of manufacture, the 1st of January of that year.

    You're about 4 months ahead of yourself there. ;) There are still some cars that will get a two-year ticket up to the end of May. From 1st June, annual testing comes in for cars over ten years old.

    Yes that is correct, that legislation while talked and written about is not in force. There will be a new government soon and who knows what will happen as regards car tax etc. So let's quote the rules as they are now.;);)
