Renting a Field

Hi, Just wondering if its a legal requirement to draw up a lease if you wanted to rent a field off a farmer for a year or two? Just seems a lot of hassle. It would be a lot easier to agree terms with a handshake! Thanks, Niall

11 month rental peroid and a hand shake.
can write a few terms on a piece of paper and sign if ya want, wont stand up to much though, eg trim hedges every two years, leave fence in same condition, amount to be paid and what date to be paid on
