might sound like a silly question....but... my imersion is not working, do I need to find an electrician or a plumber. Also, are these things expensive?

Depends on what it is doing. Is it not heating or is it boiling the water?

get a spark to check the wiring first and test the stat, then he will suggest whether u need a plumber or not
