BF Goodrich All Terrains are probably the best and last for ages. Cooper STs are also well thought of.

There are several tread patterns that are halfway between road bias and all terrain. This site has a handy tyre selector -http://www.4site4x4.co.uk/home.aspx

Try it and then see if you get what you want locally or off Camskill

    I have a 2006 Pajero LWB with 265 70/16s that need replacing.

I have BF Goodrich Rugged Trails on the back and something called Nankangs on the front.

    All need replacing.

What's a good solid tyre? I do mostly road driving but I don't spare the vehicle when it comes to pot holes or going into the odd off road situation.

I'm also thinking of the winter scenario like we just had so something that would suit a variety of weather situations would be best.

I had the jeep in for service and the garage offered me All Sport for €90 plus VAT ... a budget tyre of some sort.

I don't want to pay a fortune for tyres but I don't want to put rubbish on it either.

    Suggestions appreciated.

As others have said above, BF Goodrich, they have strong sidewalls as well which what you need to avoid pothole damage.

Like I said to dasheriff, BFG do a range of treads between road and all terrain, look at the link in post #2. They'll set you back around €120ish each.

If that's a bit rich, look at Cooper or General Grabber tyres. You do get what you pay for though.

Thanks Sean ... BFGoodrich it is.

I don't mind paying a little extra for a good tyre as I do use and abuse them on bad roads etc.

Next job is to decide the type ... thanks again! :)

    I'm back ...

Only just got round to looking for tyres.

They seem to be like gold dust .... they can't be got.

    Anyways ... I have BF Goodrich 265/70 16s's Rugged Trail T/A

I've tried a lot of places and most haven't got them.

One place can get 265/75 16's .... any opinion on these?

Looking at the BF Goodrich site, my options are as follows:

    http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/size/ltmetric/265/70/16/tires

There only seems to be one choice in the 70 range and it's All Terrain marked rather than Rugged Trail.

    http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/size/ltmetric/265/75/16/tires

In the 75 range there are 5 choices ... my options are the first two me thinks ...

As it stands I have two companies who think they can get the size 70's for €170 each, another one has a set in stock but wants €242 each per tyre and another company can says they can get the 75's for €170 each.

    What do people think?

The 75's will be slightly larger in diameter, a standard Land Rover size but may make the speedo on a Pajero under read if that bothers you. 70s are 30.6" dia, 75s 31.7" dia. €170 isn't bad, place not far from me is supplying them for €160. The cheapest UK price just to buy a tyre is £119 plus delivery.

I'm not sure where you are based but I picked up 2 x BF Goodrich A/T 265/70/16 for €160 each in Cork 2 weeks ago.

    Thanks for the reply Sean.

I'd heard that about the speedo being slightly off with the 75's .... I reckon the 70's are the ones to go with.

I'm in Cork .... I've tried Cork and Kerry.

Any chance of the name of your supplier .... PM me if you don't want it public.

Tyres in general are in short supply due to two things 1 the noise regs were some tyres are no longer available and 2 they have had to change the grade of oil used in the manufacture of the rubber and a lot of manufactuers are struggling to catch up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭PaddyBloggit

I have BF Goodrich 265/70 16's on order ... to be fitted at the end of the week.

Will the noise regulations have any effect on them?

Is there any chance I'd fail the DOE when the regulations come into being?

No, they'll be sound for the DOE.

    Do.

Was down Pilmore [Youghal] with a new set on my Terrano II and messing around on the beach. Anyway I hit a sand shift and I was face into the breakwater, water literally lapping my bumper.

Another few inches and there was about a ten foot channel with an incoming but almost full tide ~ and I was trying to be careful I was about 30 feet away from the water's edge but the sand shifted and swung me perpendicular to the water.

My gut wrenched as I told my wife to evacuate and the vehicle sunk it's two front wheels into the soft wet sand with a squilsh. Then the back two dropped down to the body ~ the wheels could no longer be seen.

I thought this was the end and I was gripped with sheer panic. After a little I calmed down and saying we will never recover this I put it into the low box and reverse, and I rocked and rocked and rocked and unbelievably she began to move and soon all four wheels were firing sand high into the air and I was free. This sounds too easy but I've never been back, lost the nerve.

However, I put my recovery squarely down to the BF Goodrich's All Terrain grip. Later I saw a man jump into the hole we had excavated, it was up to his neck. later on again we discovered we had broken our exhaust too.

I find them a bit too heavy on the steering for my weak steering box but the grip is IMO unsurpassed, I have a few snow and mud stories too, but they're boring in comparison. :)

Noise regulations more affect mud tyres hence the new redesigned BFG MTs. It only affects manufacturers, not something that would be checked in a DOE/NCT

I have Cooper ST's on my landcruiser and there nearly done and have been looking for a set of BFG all terrains but i have a limit of €150 a tyre, im from roscommon but would travel to get them at the right price so if anyone can help locate a place that will do the tyres for that price it would be great!!
    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

You'll struggle to get them for that. Cooper STs, General Grabber AT2 (selling like hotcakes in the UK) and the new Continental Conti Crosses may be €10 - 15 or so a corner cheaper.

You say you'd travel, you'll burn a fair bit of diesel travelling around to save a few euro ;)

Are the Cooper ATR's any good!! Can get them for around £230 for 2 of them in england and thats including VAT but not delievery, is that a good price for them?

You'd get a general grabber at2 for that price, theres a place in castlebar that told me he'd supply and fit for under 150 a corner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭mantua

Are the general grabbers any good heard alot of people on about them but thought they were just a cheap version! Where in castlebar can you get them? Might take a spin over this saturday to have a look!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

General Grabbers are a good tyre, equal rating with Cooper and Kuhmo probably, not quite as good a s BFG but not far behind in back to back tests done by the 4x4 comics.
