That story is quite strange when compared to the one a few weeks ago:

this story is not so strange and is actually good news.

there are 3 factories in intel ireland, only one running at or near capacity.

The news last week was to use an existing factory that is idle and incorporate this into the factory that is busy - securing jobs and the site for at least 5 years

the factory that is closing is an old factory that is producing very little.

Guess it always helps to dig a little deeper.

The reason why the existing factory is ideal is due to it being emptied in anticipation of being upgraded to 1270 2 years ago, which Intel Ireland lost out to an American factory (that was inevitable) and then the Israelis (after, I belive, a couple of million dollars incentive from there government) and im not sure that the 1bn Euro fine imposed by europe would have helped either.

Then shortly after some 500 people in IFO ie Fab 10 and Fab 14 combined, and a small few people in Fab 24 were made redundant (through voluntary or forced) and people that were left were under the impression if they got 1272 that there jobs would be secure ie they would be trained to either backfill the current MTs who would be sent to the states for training or them themselves sent to the states for training, that does not seem to be the situation unfortunately.
