I'd like to see the challenger too. I might go, but it'll be a night before decision if I do. I have no major purchases to make this year except a quad - but I might end up buying something second hand with low hours.

What was Cavan like, I always found it to be more farmer friendly than the punchestown show which is aimed more at the contractors???

The Uncle is planning on buying a tanker and I think he'll go for one of the Major Alpine Tankers,

We hadn't planned to buy anything but ended up putting a deposit on a 9ft Topper! The show was alright,Not a massive amount of Machinery, Had all seen in about an hour and a half!

I had my tanker in Ballyhaunis for a service with Major a few weeks ago and saw the Alpine Tankers. Nice looking machine. What sort of money are they?

Got new vanes and seals in the pump, new pressure release valve. New Ball holder at the top. Check wheel bearings. Check interior of tank for corrosion. EUR 660. Would go to a non dealer to have it done closer to home, but have some connections in Major (none that would get me a discount however).

You were cleaned there my friend,a set of vanes for a vacuum pump is sold over the counter for €90 inc vat, every seal and gasket on a MEC8000 pump would only amount to a total of €20 or so,none of this work is particularly taxing or time consuming,a release valve is around €40 or so,opening the rear door and closing it again to check for corrosion(what theyre going to do if there is corrosion i dont know but anyway) wouldnt take too long nor would checking the wheel bearings, its just a matter of jacking up the tank and rocking the wheel.

A top trap for the ball might be expensive if its a steel version, one of those could be €150 or so,this may be whats driven up the price but it strikes me as expensive work, you'd have been able to do a good bit of it yourself.

I note you didn't quote one of the biggest items on a service, labour:rolleyes:

Had he done the work himself he'd still have had to buy the parts you mentioned, that's if he'd spot everything that needs to be done (No offense Reilig:D).

If you go into a dealership and ask for a service, then it's up to them to know what to check for and to carry out all those checks. That's what your paying them for. Because they've manufactured the machine, they know the weaknesses and serviceable items.

You can't put a price on peace of mind either

    Stay calm lads.

The price also included 2 bearings and seals in the pump, a new splashplate, half a new filler hose  , and half replacement of the quick coupleing system. (Just dug the receipt out this morning).

Muckit - Labour was EUR150. I wouldn't be able to do all the work that they did for that

Holy mozes lads, I must be a philistine. My Connor tanker is exactly 23 years young this spring. Original tyres worn to the tube, cracked side walls but still going strong. Never a day stored inside. Never, ever once had a service. I replaced the hose from pump to top of tank, twice in its life.

I'd never have to put anything into mine either if I only had 1 tank to empty each year. But . . . I have a 4 bay double and 2 x 4 bay single sheds. All tanks are 8ft deep and 14ft 6" wide. They're normally full in March and my tanker empties them completely. They're half full again in May and topped up to the top with pig slurry before I empty them in early May. That's 32 bays a year for myself. I also empty a 2 bay double and a 4 bay single for a relative every year. That's 40 bays in the year. A lot of men around here have their own tanker to empty their 4 bay single sheds. They have tankers that will last 25 years without a problem. If you do a lot of work with it then you have to keep it serviced and replace wearing parts.

How many bays per year do you empty??

Yeah will be heading along. Will be looking at MF, Zetor and Deutz stands- if there there. Tractors because will be changing loader tractor in autumn and these 3 brands have dealers in my area. Also will be looking at slurry injection systems etc. See what's available for farmer operation- won't be buying new though. See what would suit best and then look on 2nd hand Market.
