Problems with the Irish Times "Your vote" discussion board

In recent years the once-vibrant Irish Times "your vote" discussion board has gone into a state of decline, as evidenced by increasingly long waits between times of sending comments and their actual appearance. This is a great shame because a lot of time, ingenuity and effort has continued to go into comments, such as those posted by "Owen" "Ciunas" and many others. The pace of debate has slowed to a crawl.

Now I have found out, through an in-house contact, that the "Your vote" board has been suspended until after the election.

You would think that the Irish Times moderator would at least make the effort to put up a message to that effect, but so far, not a bit of it. This exemplifies the lazy, sloppy, couldn't-care-less attitude which this Bulletin Board has been treated by the (admittedly overworked) staff at the Irish Times.

Another forum silenced, at least for now. Shame.

The Irish Times just doesn't get the whole web thing.

In one sentence, that cleanly sums up the bigger problem.

The times is just a bunch of mouth pieces preaching from their pedastals and is no way near as representative of the irish people as a whole as the independent. i wonder how many philophesy graduates end up there because daddy plays golf with one of the editors.

Aston, that may be true of journalists but it is not true of the people who take the trouble to post.

The IT message board has the advantage of appearing with a new topic each day on irishtimes.com, so the chance to vote and comment is valued by many.

I am happy to say that a new topic was put up today (Friday 4th) so perhaps the powers that be have relented.

Incidentally, I post on that BB as Richard, Bouvet Island. I am, if you like, the board's token leftie.

The discussion board has now been taken down, supposedly for good. If anyone out there thinks like me, I have just started a Facebook Group

I rarely look at the irish times as i find the paper taqkes itself very seriously. It has all the pontifical hubris of the New York Times with the readership of a town the size of Buffolo.
