Ok could someone please help me on this issue, I applied for the grant 7 months ago and just got the letter there on tuesday to say I got it. Now I was in contact with the fees office for ages in Nuig and they said if i hadn't received my grant by the 31st Jan 2011 (final date for reg fee payment) to email them and something will be sorted out, fair enough. Then along comes the 31st, I get an email at 12:30 to say I have to have €1500 by the end of the day or else I'll be fined an extra €200, I was forced to empty my acc and borrow from friends to fund this fee. the next day the letter arrives at home so I bring it in and they say that'll be ,march or april before I get €1500 back and about 3-4 weeks before my grant kicks in. I currently have €38 to my name to survive on for a month and a college loan which is spent and is being paid back by direct debit (that now cannot be paid). How can I get my money back? staff in the fees office were so rude and unhelpful towards me and just don't care.

True - didn't think of that, given that the money has already changed hands.
Not that it'd be a problem anyway - Emma's awesome.

Got a response anyway, fee's office won't give back money until they get it from the county council which will take about 2 months, no way around it. Only option is grant advance from AIB if they'll give it to me..... I already have taken out a loan so i dunno what'll happen.

AIB probably won't give you a grant advance since you have a loan, they wouldn't give me one even though they obviously know they'll get the grant advance money back. You will have to get your guarantor to guarantee the additional debt is what I was told. Do you have a credit card yet? Also Ulster bank had a student account with a 1700e overdraft facility that you could use straight away, interest free, not sure if they are still doing that offer but worth a look.

Guarantor isn't an option for me unfortunately. Like Nuig know they will be getting the money from the council eventually for the non tuition fee, I just don't see why they can't just give me back my money now. It's just so annoying that Nuig wouldn't wait the extra day for the grant confirmation letter to come through. I just wonder has this happened to anyone else. I understand Nui have certain fee rules and the like but still they could have waited till 9 o'clock the next morning for the letter.

Hmm I was full sure I'd paid everything but just got a text from the college saying "Final Reminder" to pay fees. It was also the first I'd heard from them since September..

I hope you're not fined, as they told me absolute final date was the 31st of jan 2011. I HATE THIS DEPT.

wonder if there's anyone more senior to the people you've talked to so far that you can contact? Did you hear back from anyone in the su?

Yup they tried all they could with the fees office but no luck, fees office said they want council money first and then they'll send out cheques for the non tuition fee, but that will be after march. Oh and the person i was in correspondence with in the fees office is GONE ON LEAVE again!!! typical..... emailed the dean of my dept just to see what he would say and got directed to his secretary who said to get a grant advance, end of... It's all very easy for these ppl to say this when they're pulling in a nice wage and think that the bank is throwing money at students. rant over, sorry......

Ask your Bank to chargeback the EUR 1,500 you paid NUIG.

Depending on which payment method you used (credit card?), you may get your money back.

In the NUIG fees office, X never answers the phone. Last year, I had similar experiences dealing with these inept civil servants. These people don't care and should be fired from their jobs. The office clerks in the NUIG fees office are inefficient time wasters. Hopefully, the new Government will fire them from their jobs and get new people in their place who are willing to work. Students are paying big fees, keeping these wasters in their jobs. NUIG has so many quangos and it's pulling the college reputation down. My degree is precious to me and we expect services in return for our payments.

In my case I was served by some pretty useless staff but some of the staff there are genuinely very nice ppl and very apologetic.

You should get a job. There's a good few going at the moment. That will get you over the funk.

Go to Student Services and plead hardship, they may be able to advance you money on the strength of getting your €1.5K back from the Fees Office.
I've had mixed dealings with Fees Office staff, but the bottom line is if you are unhappy complain to someone in authority that can do something about it. Try the Director of Financial Accounting or the Bursar.
