the direction of wind should pass across it easily...if you know what I mean?

I think so. So basically the wind should flow off the bonnet onto the spoiler if the wiper is down?
Rather than against it that is.

The back edge of the spoiler should be higher than the front, so air flows across the bonnet and smoothly hits the spoiler and then flow up over the windscreen. The idea is not to create so much resistance the wiper is torn off..
