DVD repair?

Years ago there used to always be TV/VHS repair shops around but it seems they're either all gone or impossible to find.

I've got two DVD players with two similar issues - the disc tray not opening and the display reading "Blocked"; discs not being read sporadically regardless of the type of disc ie. DVD or DVDr, regardless of whether or not it's scratched.

Does anyone do repairs? I obviously don't want to spend a fortune but if I could get this fixed for twenty, thirty quid or something that'd be great.

Would a DIY fix be possible?

this is why people dont bother to fix DVD players anymore http://powercity.ie/?par=10-19-DV1122

the disc tray not opening could be simple enough if it's just the belt that needs replacing

Years ago a TV or VHS player was a significant investment and the cost of repair was considerably less than the cost of replacing the unit.
This made being a TV repairman a viable living.

Nowadays its simply not worth it , you cant make a living repairing home electronics as in most cases a new unit is about the same price as a repair.

Your best bet may be to check small ads in your local paper. Apart from possibly getting your unit fixed you can also get excellent background info on various brands re: reliability, ease and cost of repairing different models etc.
