Ohai everyone =D I'm soo happy that I got Pokémon White, I haven't played since I had Red when I was 9, it's AMAZING :D I'm just at the Elite Four now, though will have to train a bit before trying against them :)

I had a bit of a look through the thread but it's really long, just wondering something...I got my DS Lite (2nd hand) specifically for this, but I can't connect to me internet, something about the security settings not being supported, any hints? Sorry for being such a n00b :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

Whatever starters you need, I've got. Mucho breedo going on. Can't really get on Wi-Fi reliably though, so unless you wanna wait for a meet up...

If you mean <older version> => <Black / White> then after the E4 you unlock a facility that lets you move pokemon ONE WAY from Gen4 to Gen5. No Gen5 -> Gen4 movement allowed. You need 2 DSes for this and it uses DS Local WiFi

If you mean <older version> <=> <older version> trading, Gen 4 titles (Pearl,Diamond,Platinum,Heart Gold, Soul Silver) can trade between each other using local WiFi (ie DS to DS) without the use of a router or internet connection as long as you're near eachother. Gen 3 (Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Fire Red, Leaf Green) need 2 GBAs and 2 GBA Wireless Adapters or Link Cables.

Black / White are the first ones to us InfraRed to trade far as I know (IR on HG/SS was just for the walker I think), so if you're asking because your DSes WiFi is busted rather than that you have no wireless internet available, you're not going to be doing much trading on older games.

figured it out, did some shameless trading today for obvious hacks....now have shiney blastoise, tornadus, palkia and swampert, only missing cyndaquill as a starter.

I managed to beat the Elite Four and the other bits after it. I had a level 70 Serperior while the rest were around the 65 mark. It wasn't too tough but I'm surprised how strong the pokemon and trainers get after you finish the game. It's great to see all the pokemon from the original game.

I struggled a bit against the Elite 4 the first time. The second time, Sawk was great against 3 of the 4 and Chandelure was awesome against the 4th (who also uses a Chandelure).

After avoiding spoilers about the new Pokémon for months and months now I finally caught them all today meaning I can start reading Pokémon stuff online again, yay! I have to say, avoiding spoilers was totally worth it. Not having a clue what's about to jump out of the grass and constantly coming across new Pokémon you've never seen before in-game is amazing. So many "what the hell is that" moments and excited gasps as my new Pokémon started evolving into something I'd never seen before. Sawk is the first brand new wild one that I came across in-game, and I'll never forget the wow moment when it popped out of the grass and punched me in the face. I totally recommend avoiding spoilers to people when gen VI comes around, difficult as it is.

I totally loved the game of course, and am looking forward to finally reading this thread and getting more into the post-game and online stuff. I'm happy to help people fill up their Pokédexes as well, you can find my friend code in the FC thread. It's good to be back :D

Wow that battle with Cynthia is something else. I walked into the house without 2 of my main team and I get challenged to a battle not knowing who she was. She very nearly beat me but for about 4 Max Revives and around 8 Hyper Potions. :pac:

    Quick question for you folks.

When I bought Pokemon White, the sales assistant was explaining how to get Victini and that I had to return to them in order for them to enable the Liberty Pass - is this true? I had been under the impression that you could unlock the Liberty Pass on your own, provided you have WiFi access.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,477 ✭✭✭✭Raze_them_all

nope it's not, just go to the start menu and click on mystery gift and it will download.

Honestly game shops actually need to hire people who actually play games

Never played Diamond/Platinum/Pearl then? She was tough to beat though, her Garchomp beat 2 of my team before I got it down (hooray for a double weakness to ice :D)

They just really want you back in the shop ;)

I defeated Cynthia last night too, definitely one of the toughest battles in the game. None of my team can learn an ice move :(

What shop was this? (so that I can avoid it like the plague)

Well.. maybe not any more, didn't the liberty ticket download expire last night (22nd)?

Edit - just checked, it's still up. Ignore the cantankerous robot in the corner....

22nd of april I think it is. For once we get a better deal than the americans!

Checked the leaflet, you're correct. And in defence of the shop it says "Also available by distribution through selected retailers" or something to that effect, the shop may have a distro cart for customers with no WiFi access or for after the 22/4? Maybe we should all read the documentation that comes with our games, just like the guys behind the counter do, before we start casting stones... ;)

Meh i stand by my statement, tis a common thing with gamestop!

Thanks for the response. Now I don't have reason to go back and be tempted to pick up more games.
They just really want you back in the shop
With the amount of time I spend in there browsing the bargain/classic games section (World in Conflict: Complete Edition for a fiver? yes please), I'd be a tad doubtful of that... :o

In the same way that you are supposed to read the EULA when installing software but, in reality, you never bother to read it? :pac:

Ok so pretty much finished the main story and catching all the legendaries right now. Debating whether to go for the full dex or just train up a team. Ideas?

Any tips on catching Victini? I brought it down to ~1HP last night but the fecker escaped 10 Pokeballs, 3 Great Balls, 2 Ultra Balls, 5 Heal Balls and 1 Net Ball (i.e. everything I had)

Thats weird wasn't that hard when I caught him! Try moves like growl and leer to wear him down when his health is low either that or use hypnosis/sleep powder.

Damn, I'd forgotten about status effects... I left Cottonee behind since it was a bit squishy (i.e. likely to get one-shotted) and I put Munna in my PC so Victini would get into my party immediately... although, I never knew that stat-reducing abilities affected your odds of capturing a Pokemon (although, on my final attempt last night, he must've been utterly blind and defenseless from being hit with Mud Slap and Rock Smash :pac: )

    Thanks for the tips :)

    They don't!

Catch rate is solely dependant on:
    • The health of the Pokémon (relative to its full health), which can reduce the probability to ⅓× at full health.
    • The type of Poké Ball, which can augment by some ×.
    • The status of the wild Pokémon, i.e. 2× increase for sleep or freeze, and 1.5× for others.

And, as Victini is only catch rate 3, you'll on average need to spend as much time on him as eg. Giratina, Ho-oh, Lugia, Regigigas, Mewtwo, the legendary birds, the legendary beasts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 830 ✭✭✭Robby91

as Victini is only catch rate 3
Is the catch rate the basic % chance to successfully catch, or is there some fancy formula involved in calculating the % chance based on the catch rate?

I'll have to take a look at the Bulbapedia article on it when I get home, I can't let Victini get away (although, at ~Lv20, he gives a nice bit of experience so I could farm him for EXP for a little while). He always come back if you faint him, right? :pac:

Victini doesn't die when you're trying to catch it, ridiculous. You can get the exp and leave the room, walk back in and its there again.
