    60,000 miles/100,000kms. I wouldn't let it go any further.

If in doubt - whip it out..........

Not worth the expense of a snapped/slipped belt.

No you don't need to change the glow plugs every service, service intervals every 9000 miles or 12 months which ever comes first as for the timing belt I wouldn't chance it if you don't know when it was changed last its an expensive repair if it snaps

The maintenance schedule is usually in the handbook.

First of all the old water pump story,, just a myth,, tensioners and pulleys,, just a myth... when your ready go away and buy a timing belt (just the belt) bout €40. Get a friend to stick it on,, throw him a wee 50,, HAPPY DAYS. Piece of mind.

As there is a140000 miles on the car I wouldn't chance it if an idler goes and the belt slips its potentially a €600 fix as for the water pump I have often seen them start to leak after the new belt is fitted. Most garages will only fit the full kit as they have to give warranty on the job.

Terrible advice, especially for a VAG car, this might get you through on something Jap but VAG cars like to break Pulleys

Hard to imagine a post being more full of **** than this one. Why would you bother posting drivel like this? Actually don't bother answering, I've heard enough from you.

In fairness, water pumps do fail, they are often the reason a belt goes.

I got a price of my mechanic 250 says for the belt and water pump not sure if that would include tensioners.

also i got in touch with the person that sold me the car and they think the belt was done about 40-45000 miles ago

Just an idea and nothing against Ardle on this one :)
But would it be an idea that such posts are marked as being potentially very poor advice and contrary to manufacturer recommendations. As a motors forum having advice like that swimming around cannot be good.

/commence slow clap. This has to be intended to be a joke?

Water pump isnt a myth at all. Many of them have fibre impellers which at best slip on the inner shaft or shatter altogther. Its not a case of if it will fail, its a case of when.

Hydraulic tensioners leak and loose pressure, leading to a loss of tension on the belt, the belt slips a few teeth and its game over. Again, not a case of if, a case of when.

Pulley bearings become worn & leak grease resulting in siezure or collapse. Not a case of if, a case of when.
Ironically, belt failures by themselves are pretty rare.

You can roll the dice on any of these as you choose.

Sorry bout the crappy advice,, but i was just trying to save you a ball of money,, did it myself on my last belt change and no problems,, I would advise water pump every second belt change at the most,, if you have the money go ahead leave it with the garage.

Really all you've done is to be lucky. I don't think anyone responsible could advocate the "ah, it'll be grand" maintenance philosophy.

Fine if you want to chance it yourself, but hardly fair to let someone else take the chance without spelling out all the risks as well.

Are you talking specifically about VAG cars here? We are talking timing belt right? Not serpentine\fan belt. If so, whats the total amount of miles on the parts not changed out so far in your car? By that I mean the tensioner, pulleys, water pump, yadda yadda.

As for saving a ball of money, depends on how you look at it really. If you are OK with russian roulette where the stakes are an almost totalled engine or at best a four figure repair bill then fair enough, but at least let others know the stakes. Also consider that by the time the timing belt is removed on most of the VAG motors the water pump is right there to be replaced. Labour to get it repalced usually isnt that much more, if any. So really you are just paying for the parts. Pay now or pay later. Either way, you are paying for the parts, question is if you want to pay labour twice or even three times.

Yeah point taken I know I've been lucky "SO FAR"
