What would cause the engine to have needed replacing or what can go wrong with a new engine?

That could mean almost anything. What does the invoice say?

I'd want to know why the engine was changed and what failed.

Is the rest of the powertrain and the chassis likely to be shagged or was it a genuine component failure?

well i texted the man and said its a great looking car but that bit of info about the engine just ruined it for me. and i said i dont want to make an offer as it might come across as insulting and now i texted him again asking what caused it and so on.... and not getting a reply no more

It was probably flood damage. Just because the engine was changed dosen't mean the car is going to be breaking down the whole time. Take a few deep breaths and ring the seller. Don't text. Ask a few questions, what can he say?

tried calling, but no answer. i guess he did get offended even before i made my cheeky offer :D

Could be driving through a flood, oil starvation, poor maintenance, a production fault, could be lots of reasons which may be through no fault of the owner. If the new engine was fitted properly at a main dealer I wouldn't see too much wrong with it.

I put an engine in my passat in december and my brother put one in his galaxy in september .. why? Because its cheaper and simpler to change a whole eengine than change injectors and cam in his case and pump, injectors in my case. For the same or less money and similar time outlay your car can have an engine with a hundred thousand less miles. While we were at it we cleaned out the intake manifolds, intercooler and pipes etc. Well worth it.

The only thing is I've seen is that the mechanics usually don't tie up the wiring loom afterwards so you may get wires wearing through vibration.

nah dude. if he cant be brave enough to pick up his phone and he is too scared to hear out my offer i dont think we gonna make best of buds. so i might just leave him off like that. :)

What are the chances of it being a used engine fitted

highly. i dont see a new engine fitted from the dealers into a cheap car like this being honest with you. you know what would someone else call him and find out a bit of more details on it.:D

Linear spec is fairly basic. Nct nearly up, god knows what that will throw up. Had to do wishbones on a 1.8i with 40k on it (along with t belt)

My point is this car could work out expensive, unless its a vector spec you may as well be driving a passat or something.

Engine failure was caused by oil starvation seen a couple of 2.2 diesel with this problem , its the same engine as the opel vectra I would say its a fair chance its a second hand engine that was fitted

Lots more where that came from.

Have to say though, I had the first BMW 525TDS in Ireland in 1996, came through my company. BMW had to replace all of the early 2.5l units, sold it to a main dealer garage in the end with 85000miles on the clock, they were delighted to take it. I never had a problem. Stupidly traded it for a 520 which only lasted for 3 or 4 months.

There's a difference from a main dealer fitting a brand new engine and Fred in the shed fitting an engine from a scrapper which may not be much better than the one that came out.
