looking for a laptop that is suitable for doing online course work.

    Specs
budget 500euro absolute max but hoping for something around 350euro
    screen 13-15in
    3-4gb ram
should have good multimedia features and connectivity options

i presume netbooks because of screensize and ram are not suitable but am willing to consider them

Netbook are known for the lightness

12.1" is the largest for Netbook afaik and 2.6GB being max ram (although a bios update brings it up to 4GB).
most are 1GB ram(2GB Max) with the 2GB(4GB Max) also on some

    thanks for he reply

can you explain what a bios update is please?

if I could get a netbook with 2-4gb ram, hdmi and a vga port so I could connect it to a monitor it would be ideal

Tbh, bios is the heart of it, but you don't need to know it really :)

    Asus 1215N
    12.1" Screen 2GB (2x1GB ram, upgradable to 4GB).
    D525 1.8Ghz (dual core). 250GB. built-in wireless and bluetooth
It has the latest nvidia ION dedicated GFX card as well as the intel GMA .
Asus 1215N is the most powerful netbook there is currently
    Battery life: 5-7 hours.

lenovo s12. netbook with 2gb ram but portable 12 inch screen machine with hdmi. dedicated ion graphics make it better than most netbooks. 5 hours battery life. would do the job and delivered for about 300 euro.

CPU: Processor Intel Atom (N270 1.60 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2 cache)
been replaced two Gens ago tbh N4* and now the D5* Which are Dual processor
Also the ION 2 is on the Asus 1215N.

Asus are THE best for eee pc they are more stable and last much longer.

in tests there is not that all that much difference really between old and new atoms in terms of speed.

    http://techlogg.com/2010/09/intels-dual-core-atom-n550-can-it-save-the-netbook/1397

the s12 is about 200 euro cheaper - 200 euro for slightly faster - OP's choice

Lenovo (IBM) are hardly a bad brand!

For 500 euros you could buy a proper laptop without an atom chip.

Something like this maybe - will comfortably beat the asus and with the cashback will only cost about 350 euro. It has a an athlon low voltage dual core chip and ati graphics.
