Since using my iphone at the weekend as an mp3 player using headphones(i rarely do this,i have a seperate mp3 player)the iphone thinks the headphones are still plugged in,ie the speaker has stopped working when the headphones have been plugged out.
Inserting and removing headphones a few times fixes it temporarily but then it goes back to no sound (no text or ringing tones) by itself.

    Anyone encountered this?

Happened to me. Have a look in the USB jack and the headphone jack. Are they dirty / red tab showing? Happened to mine due to light water damage.

Insert and remove headphones 5 or 6 times to clear this...

If this does not work, strange fix is to set an alarm through Clock App and let go off, without headphones plugged in...

Plugging the headphones in and out does work but goes back to no sound again.
I had 3 alarms set today and they went off but again went back to the same.

Do i need to contact apple and/or 3?

Contact Apple - don't go through your network provider. If under warranty (and you are confident there is no liquid damage) - you can pay Apple €29 to get your replacement before handing faulty handset.

I had same issue with 3GS - but that was after spilling Coke on it!

Get a torch - and point it down the earphone socket - and see if t has turned red/pink - do same at the power connector

Apple supposedly reject it this is the case

Just used a microscope & light at work to have a look.No pink/Red visible in either socket...hmm...
Does seem to be dusty though but the microscope could be exaggerating it.

You should be fine so Barry! I would pay the extra €29 - I did before and it was painless - you have 10 days I think so send back the faulty iphone
