In another thread a guy (jamescd) got free supersaver delivery on an item under £25, I put an order through for about £12 and it was free too. Usually you have to be over £25 for free delivery to Ireland.

Their website still states £25 is still the limit so it might be a glitch as they did have other trouble with they supersaver system recently.

I attempted another order of a dvd for £9 and also got offered free delivery

There was no problems with super saver in the last three months anyway!

If you're buying books why use Amazon. The book depository has free shipping world wide.

Baffles me that people use Amazon anymore.

Even just for books, Amazon are still sometimes cheaper than the book depository. And quicker to ship. I was waiting aaages for my last order from the book depository.

The book depository are ****ing slow though... With Amazon I'll get something within the week if I order over the weekend, with TBS it might show up a couple of weeks later. (Delivery to a UK address btw)
They're fine if you want to use a 10% off voucher that they're so fond of issuing and are in no hurry for the book, but otherwise I'd use Amazon

A similar glitch exists with Sendit.com. They say they charge 99p delivery to Ireland but fail to actually charge it. This was also the case with Asda, however they now appear to have corrected it. (I have only ordered DVDs from either).

With the Book Depository, I once ordered a book on Sunday evening and had it by normal delivery the following Tuesday. It may just be luck of the draw.

Still working, I have an item in my basket for £9 and I have the option for free delivery. Wonder if they would cancel the order and look for the shipping costs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

I notice that the free supersaver is also to a variety of european countries. Does anybody know if we can get supersaver to Ireland from continental amazon sites, like amazon.de or amazon.fr? I was trying to use google translator to find out but couldn't see anything. Would be handy to avoid currency conversion fees.

The free super saver on orders under £25 is handy at the min though!

I ordered a bluray box set last night for about £16 and it should be despatched soon. I'll let you know how I get on.

I also tried to order a DVD worth a mere £3 and I'm still getting the free delivery option :)

Did you make sure all of the items you added are sold by amazon and not a different merchant ? Check just below the price of each item, it needs to say "Dispatched from and sold by Amazon.co.uk"

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

For those with multiple items you need to make sure they are all be sold/dispatched by amazon.co.uk or you will incur seller's postage charges.

To filter out marketplace sellers first do your search, say for a micro sd card, then you have to select "by department", where it says "Electronics & Photo: See all 21,256 items ", now on the left side of the screen down the bottom you can click a tick box on "seller", if amazon is not there click "see more" and select amazon.

You can also choose "free supersaver delivery" on the left, this will show some marketplace sellers who might only give free delivery to the UK, or some are delivering from Jersey so you might be liable for VAT if over €22 and possibly duty if over €150

I can see rubadub's great little primer there being linked to a lot as a 'guide' for newer amazon users, so said I might tag on a link to a previous thread about Irish prices for amazon.

It's a greasemonkey script for firefox that adds in a handy little euro price to the product page. Not essential, but defiantly handy.

It is handy, it also recognises VAT differences, so is not just a currency convertor. Speaking of currency I have noted the euro price offered on the past few things I ordered and I was always better off paying in sterling and accepting my CC & bank charges -i.e. amazons euro exchange rate is not great, but not ridiculous.
    rubadub wrote: »
    -Order Total: GBP 93.48

using their currency converter it was

    -Payment Total: EUR 112,43

I checked on XE at the time and it was

    93.48 GBP=107.672 EUR

Of course nobody gets this and it is usually 2-3% more than this using CC or paypal so I chose to pay in sterling via CC.

    My BOI mastercard statement was
    93.48GBP RATE 0.8549 €109.34

So mastercard was only 1.5% more than XE
    Amazon was 4.4% more
And I saved €3.09 by choosing to pay in sterling rather than use amazons converter.

My statement shows the payment on 4 May, so I wonder if it is taken on that date and if the XE rate would have been the usual 2-3% I would expect.

You can also use this search engine to find good bargains.

Ordered two books yesterday for £10 total and didn't have to pay shipping, got an email today saying they had been shipped.

Cheers for the tip, I'd been meaning to get these books, but was going to wait until I had a large enough order to qualify for free shipping.

Hmm..I'm wondering is this why shopireland.com is down. Are they updating the system to match Amazon's new delivery policy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

I agree with rubadub, you are better off paying in sterling and letting bank do converting on amazon (possibly not for small orders - of which there are prob a lot due to the free supersaver under £25 now! - under £10 due to the minimum charges from banks....) i pay in euro on ebay though.

Thanks very much for this, been using it the past few days. Its great to be able to get things spotted on HUKD before they sell out. Just ordered Draper wheel wrench for approx €5.30 as the one in my car is crap. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001KA1EE/ref=ox_ya_os_product

It was good while it lasted..

Aye. We definitely live in a backwater when it comes to online shopping with free delivery :(.

I got two items with free delivery though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

Was just placing an order at amazon there. Even though one of my items wasn't in stock, my order still qualified. They will ship my out of stock item separately, but I have the option to cancel at anytime. SO basically I am getting free shipping on a £9 order... as if i wished i could cancel the out of stock item.

Is there any flaw anybody can see in this logic? Just order out of stock items to bring order over £25, then cancel the order for the out of stock item straight away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,340 CMod ✭✭✭✭Davy

They could charge you afterwards as your the one backing out, thats if they notice. The way it was before, it was their fault

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭mp3ireland2

yeah i suppose, that is quite a simple flaw! I want all the stuff i ordered, so won't get to test it out!
