iSCSI, what is it?

Can anyone please explain to me in simple terms and plain english, what iSCSI is and how I might use it. Any web site I have found on the topic is overly academic and over my head.

iSCSI is an interface between a storage device and a server system usually.
It works over the IP Network as opposed to traditional storage transfer media.
