Today the power/lock button on my iphone 4 has stopped working(as in it wont lock/unlock my phone. This is a big problem as you can guess as if my phone powers off or loses its charge then I've no way of turning it on.

Can anyone advice me what to do?

Its a jailbroken 4.1 firmware, so if I return it to apple will they automatically update it to the latest firmware(which I don't want)?

Is it possible to get it fixed locally etc?

Any help will be great guys.

    Thanks

    Hi Four,

I do that repair for people, but it involves taking off the warranty sticker which wouldn't be good if anything major happened.

In the mean time, if you go to Setting->Activator->Anywhere ->Down, Up->Sleep button.

This will set the sleep functionality to pressing down followed by up in the volume rocker.

If it is jailbroken, and you have saved you shsh you can still upgrade it, then downgrade it back to 4.1, but sometimes apple send you out a replacement, which you will still be able to have a theathered jailbreak on, and in time you will get an untheathered one. So I would recommend to just send it to apple, would be a lot cheaper than local shop.

    GL with it anyway.

Thanks once again for the help. Yeah I've the shsh saved(4.1) but I'm not sure about what tethered jailbreak means?

I'd say apple will send me a new phone if I send it back to them which is fine but the jailbreak really is what really makes the iphone stand out for me.

Obviously if I send it back to apple I'll have to get rid of the jailbreak by upgrading to the latest firmware?

a theathered jailbreak mean you have to plug it in and run the software when you reboot the phone.

Apple will fix your phone, not send replacement. But even if they do, the exploit is in the boot rom, this means that apple have to release a new hardware to fix it, so your new phone will be jailbreakable.

If I was you, I would use your backed up shsh to restore to 4.1 and send it back to them, it is unlikely they will update it. Then when you get it back just run limera1n again.

Only negative side, is that when you send an iphone for repair, the change the screws to new apple screws, which there currently not tool to open with, so if you cracked you back or what not, you couldn't get a cheap replacement.

I don't understand the boot rom(but I know you know your stuff so thats fine by me)

Yeah, I'll ring apple in Belfast tomorrow and tell them whats happened, and then I'll restore it to 4.1 and pray to god they don't send me a new one :)

Thats fine by me, I don't intend to crack the back of the iphone as the cover I have is a good thick one :)

I'll let ye know how I get on with apple.

Thanks again for the expert help dude.

But what happens when your phone either crashes or powers off due to no battery power? How do you turn it back on?

Also how to you put it in DFU mode(pressing home button and power button together)???

I presume its Victoria Square store in Belfast where I ordered the iphone from that I contact about getting a courier to pick it up?

No, you just contact apple directly. I bought mine up in belfast too and sent it back to apple. If you need to switch it on, plug in the charger. Otherwise the activator command I gave you will work for a while.

Sound, I'll ring up Victoria Square and get the number/details to get in contact with apple.

since its still in warranty ring apple on 1850 946 191. my home button stopped workin last week and i rang them and they gave me 2 options.

1- send them the iphone and they'll send a replacement within a week to 10 days

2- pay €29 and they will send u a replacement iphone (via UPS) where you hand the UPS guy the broken iphone and he hands you the replacement. This costs €29 but you get an immediate swap and it only takes two days. The replacement i got on wednesday had a clicky, slightly loose home button so i rang on fri and they asked no questions and sent me another one, free this time which is due tomorrow according to the tracking number.

Make sure you wipe the memory and data on the phone you are giving back otherwise they'll know its jailbroken and it might affect the warranty

Ok, but my main concern is the fact of not been able to have an untethered jailbreak option on the new phone(since they will obviously get you a new iphone with the 4.2 firmware on it?

But kjl above said that even if they do send you a replacement that you can still jailbreak a new iphone through the boot rom?

why does everyone never say the other bit to qualify for option 2, ya need to give them credit card details and they put a 500 euro hold on your card until they get the phone back

I know, so that obviously means that I won't be able to downgrade to 4.1 and JB?

I've purchased alot of apps via cydia and now it looks that I won't be able to use them

its actually €577 hold on your card and its only for the dishonest that put a nokia 3210 into the box instead of ur broken iphone. apple will get ur phone in 2 days n theyll email u to say they hav received it. if ur iphone is genuinely broken then there will b no problem.

with regard to the jailbreaking, u wont get an iphone with 4.2 firmware. itll b the older firmware. i no this because i had 4.2 on my broken one and cudn restore from backup until i upgraded to that so ul hav no trouble

So I'll get a replacement phone with which version of firmware? Theres only a jailbreak up to 4.1? So if its not 4.1 or before I won't be able to JB right?

Sweet!!! 4.0.1 is fine by me. I'll be able to upgrade to the 4.1 firmware(which i'm currently on) and then jailbreak it!

Thanks for the info. Will def go for option 2!! ;)

i dont think ya can shift restore to 4.1 on stock firmware, ya will have to jb and stay on 4.0.1
sn0wbreeze wont work for the iphone 4

I don't mind staying on 4.0.1 and jailbreaking. When a jb for 4.2.1 becomes available I presume I can then upgrade and then JB?

Question: how do I get the phone into DFU mode so that I can do a restore to take off my jailbreak?

I'm getting a replacement in 48hrs and have to give UPS this phone. So have to make sure the jailbreak is gone.

The home+power button combo won't work obviously?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

I'm nearly sure tiny umbrella can put it in DFU
Other than that just go to the limera1n app and select remove limera1n

you dont need to put into dfu mode to restore, just plug it in and hit restore.

its simple u dont have to go near itunes. all u hav to do is go to settings, general, reset, erase all content and settings

it takes less than a minute and the iphone is then factory reset

Ok, so if i just uninstall Limera1n will that be enough to hand over the iphone, or am I better to just do a full restore as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭Four of a kind

will unistalling Limer1n be enough or will I need to do a full restore in order to make sure apple don't detect that I had my phone JB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

    i'd say do both

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭Four of a kind

Ok, I've done a restore to 4.1 successfully!

Is there anything else I need to do before I hand it over to courier?

Have to take the zagg shield off it as well:mad: even though I doubt it will work after I take it off :(

    Sorry for the delay...

Honestly, I've never had to do either. I never let the charge go below 5% and *touch wood* it's not crashed since then either.

DFU mode? Never used it. :D

Whenever it gives me any grief I just sync it with the PC and it's fine. I really should get it sorted and I keep meaning to as well, but 3 tell you to bring it in to Fonemenders and they're not Apple certified. I've gone into them once before as I'm guessing they'll just send it back to Apple and give you (me) a refurb replacement they have there in the shop from 3, but they didn't have a 32gb iP4 in stock, so were meant to call me when they did. I guess I've been waiting for that call since last September...

I should probably just bring it in to them tomorrow, but having to restore it and then go back to using my W715 for a (whole!) 24 hours, kinda puts me off. :o

When I get the new iphone(tomorrow hopefully) and its the correct version to jailbreak....is it best to sync it with itunes to get all my stuff back onto it and then jailbreak, or jailbreak first then sync?
