I see that Noel O'Flynn is retiring, another FF rat jumping ship.

I was just wondering if there is anywhere that has looked at the cost of all the retiring td's. I think it would be interesting to know what the full amount of cost to the taxpayer would be.

I would gladly put it to any FF election candidate that calls to the door. I also think it's important that we as voters tackle them on issues like this when they call to the door

The cost will be a few million, which whilst not an insignificant amount of money, is a drop of water in a bucket when compared to our other outgoings. Don't pay too much heed to the news reports of politicians retiring, they will and are being used as a red herring for a population addicted to begrudery.

Drop in the ocean or not, it is still in a lot of cases a bumper windfall for years of arrogance and incompetence

The man will be 60 this year.

Don't know about you but I'd love to be retired by that age.

It's not like he's young and jumping ship. Don't see how retiring at 59 makes you a rat

The thing is, there are far too many of these ''drops in the ocean'', which when all added together, contribute significantly to the ocean of debt.

Given that the government have already made it more difficult to be eligible for the full contributory pension, are abolishing the state transitory pension and extending the retirement age to 67 I think it's disgusting they're retiring on a full final salary, defined benefit pension... the fact the government has raided the pension pot by "investing" it in Irish banks rather than bluechip companies and in countries with growth potential makes it even more of an insult.

FF TD's should not be getting a pension after getting us into debt now they want to rewarded with massive pensions. We are such a bunch of pushovers. MM wanting TV debates is just a stunt to avoid the abuse FF'ers will receive at the door. And by God I will give them a flea in their ear if one sets foot near my door.

This was covered on today's Tribune. Article here.
The mass exodus of TDs and ministers from the Dáil will cost taxpayers over €10m in payoffs over the next two years
€10m is the equivalent of 0.0533% of last years Exchequer Deficit. Although meaningless, the remainder is 99.9467%.

There needs to be investigation into this. I would like to see a political party with an agenda to put a 90% tax on all TDs/ministers pensions and back date it to anyone who retired from 2002 onwards ala the bankers...If they say the bankers shouldnt get their bonuses as the banks would of went to the wall ...why should these jokers get 100s of 1000s in lump sums and a pension before the age of retirement come on political parties do the right thing

I am fed up with hearing that we are a nation of begruders, why is it when people see fairness as the way a system should be run others brand them as begruders. I am working hard for the last 39 years, just as hard as any politician and at 58 this year, I will not be able to retire (nor would I expect to) with a lump sum of some 200 to €300,000 + a pension of over €30,000 per annum depending on what position I held as a policitian. This is lunacy and tell me how can we afford to continue to pay this. The country is losing €15,000,000,000.00 per annum and we still persist with this and all the ordinary workers taxes are going up every year to pay for this, people on €25,000 to €35,000 who needs every bit they can get to pay for morgage and put food on the table for their family.confused.gif
