Grinding teeth because of new crowns

I had 2 crowns put in to replace the last e teeth in the lower back of my mouth about 10 weeks ago at a cost of €1500. Since they have gone in I have started clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth.

I went back to my dentist and she said it was very unusal to start this habit, but that I had and recommended I get a night gum shield (which cost €120). This does nothing for the clenching and grinding in the day

I am really feed up though because the an clenching my jaw through out the day, I keep getting jaw pain and a headache and I am destroying the rest of my teeth. Is there anything that can be done about the crowns which are the cause of the problems. If I could go back to the time before I got them in I gladly would, also it extremely annoying to pay all that money and end up worse off then I was before I started.

Tooth grinding and clenching can be a common problem and not always that easy to treat. There are many potential causes, and even within the dental profession there are different opinions about causes and treatment.

Sometimes, even small changes in the position and shape of the teeth can alter things just enough to stimulate grinding. Did you have any grinding issues before the crowns were placed? If everything was perfect before the crowns went in, and kicked off as soon as they were placed, then adjusting or replacing them should do the trick. If after adjustments, they still dont feel comfortable, it may end up being necessary to remove the crowns, try temporary crowns to get the position and shape correct, and then place new ones.

My advice to you would be to talk to your dentist, explain about the headaches and the level of your discomfort, perhaps try some simple adjustments first before the more involved process of replacing crowns.
    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. I never had a problem with teeth grinding until I got the caps, and now I am constantly clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth.

Would it be possible for the dentist to file down the crowns without taking them out - they feel to big in my mouth?

If the crowns feel big the bite might be off alright, they can be adjusted but not a huge ammount, give it a try
