Obviously giving up the fags would be a good start, my goal is to be able to play 90 mins of football again without dying a death after a few minutes! Never been to a gym before...

Talk to the instructors there. They'll put you on a programme based on your fitness level and ability.

You've made the important first step.... good luck!

I dont have much advice about the gym or weights but you should look into "HIIT". You know yourself what soccer is like: 30/40 seconds of sprinting/jostling followed by a minute of two or rest. For this reason jogging on a threadmill for half an hour isnt much good to you (other than for a warm-up of course).

I'm sorry for ya mate, but these places aren't out to look after you. They have more people dedicated to getting you to sign up than they do to train you

Well you're starting off with a great mentallity to begin with. Alot of people try to get back into sport to get fit. But in reality what they should be doing, is what you're trying to do, get fit to play sport, not play sport to get fit.

Oviously big adive which im sure you're more then aware of is to try and get yourself off the smokes.

to be honest mate giving up smoking is easy, you just have to want to give them up. im 30 days off them and dont miss them at all.
when im out is still go out to the smoking are with friends just to be out there and not fear the place, i still walk to the front door of the house every few house to let my mind feel like im still going out there for a smoke. i smoked 20 a day(30 if i was drinking) and apart from the first few days iv never got a craving for one. i can taste food again, im not waking up coughing up lumps of cack, makes me wonder why i actually smoked for 10 years
