I think you may be entitled to claim for €500 relief with your annual tax return, unless that relief got the can with the last budget ?

EDIT - you're moving in in Feb so it would actually be 11/12ths of €500 so closer to €458

Do I have to wait until the end of the year or can I claim on a month to month basis?

rent relief has been abolished for new claimants.

As for rent supplement (allowance).. possibly in Dublin, but only after paying rent on your own for 6 months and have been assessed as having a housing need.

Are you earning or on welfare?

I am in fulltime permanent employment

    In that case, http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting_a_home/tax_relief_for_tenants.html
If you live in private rented accommodation in Ireland and pay income tax, you may be eligible for tax relief on part of your rent. Relief is also allowable on rent paid for premises outside the State.

The relief will be phased out over 8 years

Claimants who were not renting at 7 December 2010 and who subsequently enter into a rental agreement will not be able to claim relief

So the question is, were you renting on 7th December 2010?

If not, no relief for you. The relief amount is harmless.. it's equivalent to €400 for the entire year if you paid over €2000 of rent. You can claim it on PAYE anytime, they simply adjust your tax credits rather than sending a refund cheque.

I was renting on the 7thdec10 but im moving in to an apartment now?, can I claim for rent I have paid up to 4 years ago, this government really make my blood boil, I bet they wont be phasing out their big expenses bills

Then you are not entitled to any relief. The tax relief is gone and you don't qualify for Rent Supplement.

From the wording* on citizensinformation.ie it would appear you can still claim the allowance as you had been renting on 7th December.
    * but of course they could have mis-worded it.

you can still claim for the past 4 years. Register for PAYE anytime, click "claim rent tax credit" for each year, and submit it.
