I am finishing my 4 year course in University and I have been living at home for 4 years. I don't want to live at home once I leave college.

I read on the FAQ that a person under 25( I'm 22) , whose living at home may not be qualified for a job seeker allowance as I'll be assessed on my parents income.

how long do i have to be residing on my own for my parents income not to be assessed?

Anyone klnow the answer or Am I wording this wrong?

I've heard it was a month.. but that doesn't sound right to me. Just wondering would it be worth my while moving out now or not.

I, age 23, moved out of home to take up a FAS work placement (unpaid but you are still entitled to collect dole payments). Living at home my dole was €40, so I reapplied to the office where I now live. I was told by at least 6 different social welfare officers before I moved that my payment would change to the full €144, after I moved I was told that I'm not allowed "benefit" from the placement so my payment will stay the same, €40 a week with rent to pay (€55 a week) absolutely ridiculous! So i'm still means tested from my parents even though I live half way across the country. My application hasnt formally come back yet with my entitled amount but you can guarantee a hell of a fuss will be made if it comes back €40.

Sorry I know its not answering your question but its a similar enough situation

Benefit and Privelege (which is the name of the system that assesses the advantage of living with your parents) only applies if you are living at home. It should not apply if you are not living at home. If you move out, then you should simply ask for a reassessment on the basis that you're no longer living at home.

There are other practical issues that can cause difficulties, like how do you pay for your rent? Unless you can point to some particularly harsh circumstances, then you are unlikely to get rent supplement.

If you are still receiving JA, then it is possible that you are on the Back to Education - Education, Training & Development Scheme. If this is the case, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to get the full payment.

You are not benefitting from the doing the placement, you are simply asking that Benefit & Privelege is not assessed because you are no longer living at home.

You should ask them for a review and a written decision, with a view to possibly appealing.

I really don't get the under 25 thing, fair enough the living at home thing does make sense, but why ignore that rule once someone hits 25? What changes!?

Myself and my older brother both finished college at the same time but hes about 4 years older than me. After college we both had to move home for a while and he was entitled to the Dole, I was not

Its just what I was TOLD, I've been dealing with welfare/CWOs enough lately not to listen to what they say and to get all decisions in writing. My application is still being assessed and I can't see how they could possibly justisfy giving me €40 a week and find it hard to believe that that will be the case until I see it in writing. It will definitely be appealed. As i said it was only what i was told that day in the office, not the final decision yet.

cool, if you haven't already check out the department's guidance on Benefit & Privilege http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/ua_benpriv.aspx and bring to their attention that it only applies if you are living in the parental home

Cheers for that, I've been through every site possible trying to find information and never found that page. I'll definitely be quoting half of it back at them!
