iPhone 3GS Battery Replacement

    Hi All,

Long time reader, first time poster :)

The battery on my iPhone 3GS 16GB has seen better days and I've decided I'll have a go at replacing it. I've looked at videos on YouTube and to be honest I reckon Ill give it a go anyways as I've got my moneys worth by now. It is out of warranty and was previously Jailbroken before now and am currently on software version 4.1. I have nothing to loose so I might as well have a go...

But I wish to find out off other people who have tried this or would know about it how to go about it or any precautions I should take:

Will I loose all my data on the phone when I take the battery out and replace the new one?

Does the version of the phone matter because I was reading on another site that the batterys were suitable for up to 3.1.2? I was thinking it shouldnt really matter because its not really controlling any function on the phone, just giving it power??

Also was looking to buy the battery off ebay. You can buy a 1600 milli amp battery which is supposedly better than the 1200 mA one already in the phone for around €10... Would it be advisable or should I stick with another 1200 like the original?

    Thanks in advance :D

It is a very easy repair.

No you wont lose you data and version number does not matter

there are a few things to look out for, when you are removing the logic board, there is a small tab in the bottom right that is easily broken off when removing the circuit board, it causes the phone to loose signal. The battery is a bit of a mare to take out, if all else fails, get a screwdriver and yank it up.

If you really mess it up, drop me a message and I can fix it up for you.

Sounds good, have found a few decent videos on YouTube so going by them i shouldnt really go wrong. Step by step and don't force anything too much. Thanks for clearing up the data loss worry, as for the rest of it, I could be talking to you again very soon...

make sure you get the right battery, otherwise you will end up having a blank screen or a dead phone.

    Hey,

Did this today. Replace the digitizer&glass, as well as the battery. Battery was a lot easier, but still tricky enough.

    I followed this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr6HWZa0dGM
I bought this part on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320595299450

All in all, the jobs were very tricky. The battery isnt too bad, but it can be hard to get the camera ribbon back into place again (its v tight for space back there). There is also one ribbon (#3 i think) which is tricky to get back in because you have to clamp it down when it is replaced. I would find a step by step picture guide to look at too.

You might need to buy a tiny philips screwdriver, available on ebay too. Be delicate is the main message. I used a suction pad for removing the screen after I took out the screws.

Let me know if you want me to tell you how the battery is going in a few days.

Thats great altogether. I think Ill go for th 1600mAh battery also as opposed to the original 1200.

That's what I'm looking at buying now. Tools are included also. I think its the same batter judging from the writing on it... How is your battery going, do you notice a considerable difference? I was going to leave the battery change but its turning off when it's showing in or around the 40% mark of battery, when I started the thread it used to go about 20%! Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. I just hope I wont have to PM you with an SOS :o

Mono would you believe I only did it tonight... Disaster. Opening case was okay but getting tab number 3 out of the the little clip was a disaster... also after you get the motherboard out getting the push on tab from the motherboard back onto the camera is also tough... anyway end result is replaced battery that wont turn on for me but only stays on when plugged into socket not off usb. No wifi or wont recognise sim either. You cant even do a reboot as it wont respond to the usb connection!

My advice, pay the €100 or so and let the professionals do it. I'll be paying at least that for a repair now if its even worth repairing...

If your going to go ahead with it anyways be weary of tab number 3 big time. I feel that is where I have messed up :(
