'Deal' is a generic name for white softwood timber from scots pine, spruce, etc.

how long is a piece of string ?????

depending on the type of tree it is generally the most common are douglas fir scots pine and sitka spruce
these are all soft woods but due to the weather and general lack of a summer the grain is so tight they'll perform just as well as some hardwoods i.e. cedar
