Tiger Woods - Nothings changed...

Was watching the PGA coverage last night. Tiger hit a poor 3 wood off the tee into a bunker, apparently after having slipped on his downswing. He then tried to hit some kind of miracle shot out of the bunker and didn't pull it off. No sooner had the ball left the clubface then he let a nice loud shout of "F**K! God damn it...." for all to hear as he violently slammed his club into the ground. Then off he went mumbling to himself and staring at his toes.

So all the talk about showing more respect for the game and being a better Tiger turns out to be utter rubbish as everyone thought. Why can he not be sanctioned for this kind of stuff? Other players have been penalised for hitting tee markers with their clubs after shots, etc, etc, yet this clown gets away with it all.

I never liked Tiger. His golf was incredible but I never liked the man. Now, given that we have European Golf in it's best shape for decades, I would like nothig more than to see this arrogant, ignorant man struggle for a few years and then disappear off the golfing map.

He is idolised by many young players and kids, yet he seems to have no interest in providing a good example for them. Instead he teaches golfers (young and old, given what I see on the course myself sometimes) that getting angry and throwing a tantrum is what great players do. Look at McIlroy or Kaymer or Westwood. Anyone seen them scream at the top of their voice and thrash the ground with their clubs recently?

Climb down there a little bit. He is no different to most professional golfers/sportpeople. If he makes a mistake he is pi**ed off. You see it a lot more with Tiger because they show EVERY shot.

Also 'this clown' doesn't get away with it. He is one of the most fined players on tour.

I watched McIlroy last week playing with Kaymer and I thought his attitude wasn't great. Never happy and just shrugged around. Must have been tough with Kaymer so far ahead all the same but.

To wish someone who has changed the game for everyone to fall off the golfing map is crazy.

Although people won't agree all the time with Sky, the money involved etc... if it wasn't for Tiger these things would not have happened.

good to see a man with a bit of bite in him.

since when were grown men offended by a bit of cussin'?

Forget the PC brigade and plough on.

Tiger carries on like a big spoiled child, the man has no class.
Golf was here before him and it will be here long long after he is gone, now I don't want him to vanish off the scene , but I would like to see him come second a lot:D
I have a pain in my face hearing "look what he has done for the game" screw him, what has he done for the game lately but bring nothing but bad press.

You had me up to the bold part..

grown man curses..big deal. So your essentially blaming tiger woods for people getting annoyed...whatever.

It's this sort of opinion that really annoys me. If the PGA Tour "sanctioned" players for the offences that you talk about above, there would be no players left. Players are swearing and are behaving petulantly every weekend on the tour but the reason you don't see it is because they don't get as much coverage as Tiger does.

Since his return, his behaviour has more or less been impeccable. Every shot he plays is on tv and every sort of outburst is replayed time and time on tv. So if he only has 2/3 outbursts since he came back, it's actually not as bad as perhaps someone like Garcia who thrashed the golf course with his club last year in his last event. I assumed you didn't conedmn Garcia at the time.

I think he is conscious that he has to be seen to setting an example but I think he has to be given a bit of leeway considering how high his profile is, the intense scrutiny that he is under and what is going on in his life at the moment.

In relation to your reference to McIlroy/Kaymer/Westwood, these are players who are happy with their golf game at the moment. I imagine if you scrutinised these players during a period where they were unhappy and frustrated with their game, you would see similar behaviour.

Tiger has behaved impeccably over the last 10 years, as soon as he starts to appear "normal", people are happy to jump all over him and unfairly criticise him.

He is Fined, they just dont make it public. I think its $10,000 for every offence, nice if you can afford it.

problem is he's entirely full of sh1t.

    as an example:

he preached on & on this time last year about how he was going back to his buddhist roots to try and improve himself as a person and a family man. the idea of remembering one's "core values"... yada yada.... blah de blah.

heres the transcript from his interview with kelly tighlman from the golf channel. im sure most of you have saw it:

KT: I noticed you're wearing a bracelet, can we see it?
    TW: Yeah.
    KT: What does it mean?
TW: It's Buddhist, it's for protection and strength and I certainly need that.
KT: When did you start wearing it?
TW: Before I went into treatment.
KT: Will you be wearing it during the Masters?
    TW: Absolutely.
KT: For the rest of your life?
    TW: Absolutely.

anyhow, lo and behold... the bracelets gone, he doesnt wear it anymore.

    Lol!

just a cynical ploy for sympathy.

its a silly little thing but its indicative of the guys lack of integrity on or off a golf course. promises he made about behaving himself during tournaments was another excercise in public relations ****.

savage golfer.... total dick.... what a shame!

I'm Tigerist, I'll give you that, but not racist!

Sorry if I annoyed a few here. I totally accept professionals get upset and annoyed. But comparing Rorys walking around with his shoulders sagging to Tiger cursing at the top of voice and slamming his club into the ground, is a bit much really.

I really don't accept that you see it more from Tiger because he gets more TV coverage. He does it more than anyone else. You will rarely if ever see him hit a terrible shot and just watch it fly and land and then walk up to find it. Like Westy for example.

Rory got into trouble once for smashing a tee marker before. But I think everyone here will agree that was totally out of character. If you saw Tiger do it though you wouldn't be surprised. I have yet to see anyone else throw their club and have it bounce into the crowd like Tiger did last year.

For the record, I have never seen or even heard of Kaymer getting visibly upset to the same extent. He strikes me as the kind of guy who probably didn't even do that as a teenager.

Garcia on the other hand makes Tiger look like a fluffy bunny. I know it must seem like I am picking on Tiger and no one else. Don't get me wrong, anyone beating the crap out of the ground with their club and swearing at the top of their voice deserves to a 5 shot penalty IMO!! Garcias bunker incident should have seen him banned for a month...

The point I'm simply trying to make is that this guy gave the impression he was going to behave differently and change his attitude. Even Palmer (I think it was anyway, might have been Nicklaus) I believe said they thought Tiger displayed poor behaviour and needed to have more respect for the game. Are you saying that Nicklaus or Palmer are picking on Tiger too? I guess they only see the TV coverage also....

There's a brand new putter at the unreachable far side of the lake on our course. Someone threw it there in a huff after missing a putt. I would love to see tantrum throwers suspended or disqualified both in amateur or professional golf. I wasn't aware that Tiger was being fined often. Although 10,000 or whatever to a guy with 1bn in the bank probably won't make him stop!!

Palmer made those comments before he said he was going to try and improve his behaviour.

In fairness to Tiger, I think he has been true to his word, he has tried to improve his behaviour and his behaviour has been better. Yeah, so he dropped an F bomb last night but the incidents are much less frequent than they were.

And as for the bracelet comments above, who cares if he is no longer wearing his bracelet? Do people care if Mickelson is no longer a vegetarian? NO.

I have heard (and said!) language as bad or worse as anywhere else on the golf course. Honestly, the things people call the poor inanimate white ball when it fails to do what they hoped...

Why dont you write a letter to tiger and remind him he is a role model (for what, cheating husbands?), because last time I checked, apart from the golf there is not a lot to admire about the guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 262 ✭✭Fore Iron

Jackal you're proabaly right. Nothing like a strongly worded letter to get things sorted!!

Oh well, I'm in the minority here it seems. Maybe I really am just a Tiger hater at heart and am picking on him unfairly. I just hate seeing grown men behave like 7 year olds.

That McIlroy pic is the one I was referring to earlier. I said "recently" in the post you quoted. I accept players lose it now and again. Tiger loses it a lot, A LOT more frequently.

Any recent pics of Little Mc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 262 ✭✭Fore Iron

Sorry now - as if right on cue, I flick on Sky to have a look at the golf and I see Tiger teeing off with a 3 wood and he knocks it into the rough. He shouts out loud and then hits his bag with the club. Anthony Kim tees up afterwards and knocks into the rough too, and all that happens is a barley audible grunt. Tigers second ends up in the bunker and he's on his knees hitting the ground with the club.

The guy is an arse. You just simply don't see other players behaving in the same way - so severly or so often.

Loose your cool once in a while - sure, everyone does it, I accept that. But Tiger acts like he's been struck by an affliction that someone forced on him not terribly far off every time he hits a bad shot.

Just thought I'd make the point (before this thread gets closed) that fines are never going to make these millionaires change their behavior. Now introduce a shot penalty for each occourance and tantrums will disappear from the game. Not really that bothered about swearing from adults except that kids see it and think that it's acceptable or worse stlll, normal.

i never said he was no longer buddhist... what i did say was he doesnt wear the thing anymore after saying "absolutely" to the following question: "for the rest of your life?"

he no longer wears the bracelet = fact. ( ie not an assumption )

    Whoosh!

Also, after promising his public he would reign in his behavior while playing in events he's still throwing clubs around, his demeanour is still sullen, he's still in need of a spittoon strapped to his bag and he's still using foul language.

    fact.

personally i couldnt care less if he rode around on steve williams back. is he certainly one of the greatest... unquestionable.

Do i think he's full of PR speak mumbo jumbo? Well, as the man himself says frequently..
    ....it is what it is.

Opinions are like ars3holes...everybodies got one.

Tiger woods owes the public nothing after the entertainment he has given up over the last ten years+ all the people jumping on the 'isnt tiger grumpy' bandwagon can be outraged at club throwing, spitting and the odd curseword if they like.

Its also funny that this sort of attitude towards tiger has been ramped up after the revelations about his private life whereas before it was 'just tiger'.

i for one can recognise that the man is an ultimate competitor and striving for perfection on every shot, he doesnt hide his frustration and im not bothered in the slightest. The man is human if you dont like the way he acts on a golf course then dont watch.

Tiger is a cock full stop. He might be a good golfer but he's a total arse. Always was, always will. He's a grumpy sullen immature baby. If that's your idea of golf adoration-off with ya. Personally I don't do idolation, not sportstars nor people who reside in clouds.

That's fine for any adult with a mind enough of their own to know it's not acceptable to behave in that manner when things get tough. There's such a thing as humility and dignity.
Will the next generation of golfer see it as ok to behave as such when they're watching him now in their early teens acting in such a petulant and juvenile manner?
Personally I'm delighted to see him knocked off his pedestal as World no.1 solely because of this. Bring on the Kaymers/Westwoods/Mickelsons who'll show younger golfers the proper way to conduct themselves on the golf course.

This is from the RTE school of "Roy Keane is the ultimate competitor, just look at the way he yells at his team mates". One thing doesn't mean the other. You don't have to forgo class in order to compete at the highest level. To confuse the two is unnecessary.

But let's say I do want to watch the golf, and let's just assume for a minute that my interest in the game extends beyond Tiger Woods, what then?

We are going round in circles here a mountain is being made out of a molehill, 90% of the golfers on the tour have lost their rag and the fact that tiger is the best around means that he is on television more than the rest so it get scrutinised.

And to be honest the majority of the posters seem to have some irrational dislike of the guy and 'are delighted to see him knocked off his pedestal'. He will get fined he will pay it and everybody moves on, trying to say that the next generation of golfers will get frustrated and lose their temper at times is like saying night follows day, saying that they are watching tiger woods and are going to act like him is a big stretch and one im not buying.

This isn't about Tiger Woods' skills. He is quite likely the best player the planet has seen, but why should that make it OK for him to be an arse on the course? Are you suggesting that it wouldn't be OK for the guy at the bottom of the money list even if he is also trying as hard as he possibly can?

Tiger is worth a very large amount of money. Money he would not have won through golf if there were not such a huge interest in the sport from spectators and amateur players. Personally, I feel he has an obligation to show some respect. How many people, and kids in particular, show up at a tournament just to watch him play? How many sponsors pay for him to be there just because of the extra crowd he will attract? And in return he curses out loud, throws tantrums (and clubs) and behaves like a spoiled brat.

In other sports like tennis for example, anyone who behaves that way would be sanctioned, and probably find themselves on the front of the paper the following morning. But with Tiger it has become accepted it seems.

A lot of what is being said here sounds so like the the Celtic Brat era this country has just been through. It's what causes Michael O'Leary to be idolised - not because of his management or business skills but because he says rude words on air and is a complete ignorant and insulting pr**k when dealing with other people. It has become more acceptable for people to behave that way. Perhaps that's it Jaysoose, I'm just too old and stuck in my ways. Shouting offensively and showing more or less total disregard for your sponsors, fans and spectators must be OK these days I guess. Particularly if you have a lot of money in your bank account...

And just to clarify because one point is getting missed here. I am not saying that no other golfer loses their rag. I am saying Tiger does it with alarming regularity. In particular after promising to try not to do it so much.

As for young players not behaving like him - you really don't seem to understand how young minds work. The fact simply is that young kids who want to be as good as their idol - be it in golf, tennis, snooker, football, rugby or whatever - WILL behave like them.

Get outraged and post about your dissapointment in the greatest golfer the world has ever seen and use phrases like "wont somebody think of the children"

    Hmmm.

    I didn't do either. (outrage/silly quote)
    Impressive strawman!

Im going reply to the points in bold.

1.Where did i say thought its ok for him to act like this, he gets fines like everybody else i do think people are blowing this out of all proportion as they have a personal dislike of him.

    2. Other sports are irrelevant this is golf and fines are given out by the governing body. look at the behaviour of some tennis players and note the little coverage it gets, your struggling with this comparison.

    3. I honestly am astounded by this paragraph and cannot see how you can equate tiger woods cursing on a golf course to showing a total disregard to the sponsors the fans etc..do you know how much work the pros/tiger does with the the sponsors and the fans? you cant possibly know how much work they do for charities etc. Honestly the celtic brat stuff and michael oleary?? wow. Are you trying to insinuate that by my not agreeing with some posters in the way that tiger woods behaves that im some sort of Celtic Brat and i idolise ignorant behaviour etc? I find this insinuation offensive and to be honest your making a number of assumptions without anything to back them up but then obviously when your old and stuck in your ways its hard to accept that people are allowed to have an alternative viewpoint to yours and the use of veiled insults is childish.

    4. In your opinion i dont know how young minds work, but then when your old and stuck in your ways you obviously are in a perfect position to speak about the psychology of young minds.

Everybody needs to leave off steam. I think Tiger manages himself better then Ian Poulter and Monty when they go on a rant.

People seem to fail to remmber that this man has very high standards, has lots of goals and is trying hard to achieve them. When something doesnt go right he gets emotional, thats his personality. I dont see why he should be made calm down by means of fines or bans. Harsh!
Not everyone has the same demina as Goosen, if every player was like him it would be a boring world.

Ive often seen players banging their hand violently off the face of their putter, should they be fined cos its dangerous?? Could hurt their paw and a young lad might copy it.

Should a player be fined for banging his club into the bag, as it might break another club or hurt the caddy??

Jaysoose reel your neck back in and calm down a bit. Christ almighty it amazes me how antsy people get about internet forums sometimes - even if I do do it myself sometimes...

Don't take offence. I have insinuated nothing about you because I don't even know who you are. And the celtic brat analogy was directed at no one in particular.

I agree completely with you that some people, and perhaps even myself, are unfairly harsh on Tiger. I accept entirely that you may be right that I am picking on him in particular. But are we even able to agree that the bahvaiour we are talking about is unacceptable? Whether it's Tiger, Rory, Camillo, or Barney your neighbour who plays off 8....

Most of your points have come across (don't take offence, I'm just giving my opinion to an anonymous person on an internet forum) as clearly indicating that we should leave Tiger alone and cut him some slack. That implies that his behaviour is OK. If what you meant is that it's not OK but why don't we pick on other players as much as this guy then fair enough.

For me I pick on Tiger probably because he is the most talked about and looked at player on the tour. Surely you can understand that human nature will always deal with the most obvious and severe cases first??

As for veiled insults. I don't even know what to say. Veiled insults? Really? Well I must apologise if it came across that way. It just bugs me that simply poor behaviour can be hidden behind success. That the way I see O'Leary and Tiger and a lot of other people. You charity reference is a perfect example I think. ALmost anyone who is anyone these days has set up a charity or supports a charity. You must be seen to be doing it these days. I would bet that a lot of Tigers or anyone elses "support" comes from financial contribution. It's more than I do yes, but it's not breaking your neck for the greater good. A lot of other events that people partake in, you will find they are recommended or directed to do so by their management company or sponsor. So be careful you don't gove too much credit where it isn't due.

At teh end of the day I still don't see what any of that has to do with the discussion here. Work for charity all you like. I still think you're an arse if you throw clubs and curse out loud in front of your fans.

Your Poulter and Monty thing is a good one actually. Monty could be the worst in teh world and Poulter also. There are recent enough threads here about Poults to be fair.

However, I just don't agree that it would be more boring if everyone behaved themselves. There is a certain voyeurism in taking pleasure or enjoyment from watching people lose the rag. For me, it makes me uncomfortable and I don't like it - hence the thread.

Smack the face of your putter or groan out loud when you miss a shot - fair enough. I just think using profanity at high volume, throwing clubs, and yes even hitting your bag, fall into a different category entirely.

Every so often you hear of some amateur golfer who lost the rag and threw his clubs in a lake or whatever. I can see the argument that he is not hurting anyone else and what's the harm, but to be honest I think it shows utter disregard for your fellow players who may be uncomfortable around that kind of behaviour. Sometimes it just isn't OK to act in whatever way you like or not make a really concerted effort to reign yourself in.

Oh well, I don't want to make any more internet enemies here. That's just my opinion. Generaly that's all that the internet contains. Maybe we should just leave it there and agree to disagree and accept I'll bethe one in the clubhouse scowling at you when you feck your driver into the field next door after slicing the ball into the lake!

Fair enough. I would suggest your offence-ometer could do with a little tuning down there to be honest.

Let's agree to disagree. Leave it at that. Said all that can be said and all that jazz....

You've done enough to make me rethink my stance on the whole thing. That's the point of discussion I suppose.

And be prepared, there are a lot of opinionated aresholes like my good self out there in internet land....

Crap. I knew someone would spot that eventually! Why isn't there one single button to delete all your posts in one go! :D

Ah sure there's no doubt I must have come across as all angry and offended, but honestly it's just my attempt to make my point heard. As you can imagine I get a lot of people disagreeing with me all the time! I'm never offended, just beligerant!!

Perhaps it's just that I am old fashioned. I like people to be nice and pleasant. Emotionless? Are you kidding me? What's wrong with Lee Trevino lookalikes? Laugh, joke, giggle your way around a course. I like nothing better than a good day out playing golf and having a laugh. If you feel that losing your temper is the only way to deal with your bad shots then that's a shame.

People really do have more control over their emotions on the course then they would like to believe. You don't throw a tantrum because you hardwaired that way. The fact that you have not practiced grabbing control of yourself before it starts is more likely the case.

Oh dear, I just can't help myself....
