i was looking at a car in a dealers a couple of days back. when i enter the reg in the motor tax website it shows arrears. (i assume as its been off the road for a while)

do i need to worry about these arrears or is it fairly straight forward to contact the motor tax office and start a-fresh?

Change of ownership negates all arrears, you're only liable from the date it's in your name, so no need to worry about it. A bigger concern would be why it was off the road for so long (assuming it actuall was and the last owner just didn't want to pay the tax!)

hasn't been taxed since august 2010 and changed ownership in september. (i don't know if that change was to the dealer or some other 3rd party...)

So there is your bargaining token... "I know you've her up for sale for 5 months"... etc, etc.

How can you find out when the tax is up on a car for sale if no tax disc on it.
Went onto the car tax website but you need a pin as well as the reg

How could you possibly do this without the pin number?#

That link only tells you what the rates are.

I'd be wondering if there was finance on it, and if it were paid or not? Tax is usually the last thing not to get paid...

If the car is in arrears it tells you that and how long it's been in arrears

You'll have to fill in an off road declaration because the chancers in the tax office will try and load you with the tax arrears. Five minute job from the local Garda Station and that's you sorted.

nothing to do with "chancers" in the tax office, if you have the form filled out and stamped they will process it without asking a single question, if you dont have the form then they have to charge arrears or at least from the first month you bought the car.
