Tactical Voting

I can't really get my head around Tactical Voting and would be very grateful if someone could explain it better to me?

For example. I want Johnny Johnson (FG) and Jimmy Jimson (Lab) to get in in my constituency. But I do not want Willy Williamson (FF) to get anywhere.
Johnny Johnson is guaranteed a seat, but Jimmy Jimson will struggle.

In order to best vote the way I want would this be the best thing to do:

    Jimmy Jimson (Lab) [1]
    Johnny Johnson (FG) [2]
    Everyone else [3-7]
    Leave the Fianna Fáiler blank?

your number 2 is fairly inneffectual if you vote no 1 for a poll leader in the top 4 say. All you are doing by voting Lab 1 is voting for Lab instead of FG.
If you vote 3 4 5 or 6 for the FF candidate it will have no effect at all since your vote wnnt to FG or Lab and assuming they wont get elected it wont transfer anyway.

Now someone will com in about surplus transfers but the point is your no 1 is ther on the first count and the surplus is usually transferred as proportion of the last packet of votes transferred. this will happen in the sixth to tenth count when you voting paper is dormant in he Johnson or Jimson pile. And it will be the no 6 of the voters who voted 1 ,2,3 ,4 and 5 for candidates who got eliminated.

don't be so worried about a candidate scraping in on the twelfth count on your vote when you voted 1,2 for anyone else that gets elected.
