    Hi folks,
    I need some help.
I have a verbatim 50GB external hard drive.
    Laptop is running windows xp.

The hard drive has worked fine since i got it 2 years or so ago, but now, when I plug it in, it's not appearing in the list of drives in the "my computer" section of xp, or anywhere else in fact.
When I plug it in via the usb, it is being recognized as it makes that familiar beep you get when you plug in anything usb. I can also see it when I want to "safely remove hardware".
I've a lot of data on this thing that I don't want to lose, so any recommendations on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

try rebbot,f8,safe mode, try it in another pc, or laptop.OR TRY Booting the pc from a livecd ,eg mint linux, it fits on a cdr,set bios boot mode,cd=o, cd = first boot device.
IF that doesnt work you can buy a drive caddy, open the case, install the hardrive in the caddy. The hardrive is probably still ok, the pcb,or cable to the hd maybe loose or not working properly.
my sisters pc cant detect usb hard drives , though it works on my ipod, otherwise it works fine.
linux may detect the drive, which means some windows os files are messed up,or deleted ,eg usb configuration files.

Have you checked if it is listed under Disk Management?
Click on the start button and right click on My Computer and select Manage.
On the left hand side expand Storage and click on Disk Management.
On the right hand side you will see a list of drives. You should see your external drive there.
XP may have assigned the external drive a letter that is already assigned to another hard drive or CD/DVD drive.

I find my external drive is not initially recognised in XP about 25% of the time. What I do is, go to :

    Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager

Then right-click on the top entry (which is your computer name) and "scan for hardware changes".

There may be a better way - but this has always worked for me.
