Best Irish groups who never made it

loads from the mid 90's when I actually bought cds, two that stand out are:

whipping boy

I also remember a band called "the chicks" appearing on jo whiley's show on channel 4 late one night, I remember being blown away by the song and I never heard from them again

oh and I also remember hearing a few songs on the radio from a band called "the hormones" (i think) about 10 years agao or so, I was impressed and thought I'll keep my eyes/ears open for them and again never heard from them again

I remember them, I'm pretty sure one of them is the sister of the dude from republic of loose. I also heard he wrote their songs but i'm not sure about that. Think they just released one EP.

Whipping Boy & Revelino were 2 great bands.
I remember saying them playing on the same night down in Cork around 95/96 I think. Some sort of Heineken roller coaster tour.

Whipping Boy sorta did make it, in Ireland at least. Do yiz mean never made it big abroad? Heartworm is such a classic album.

Kerbdog caused quite a bit of a stir in England with their debut - rightly so, cracking album. They nearly played on Top of The Pops with this little ditty (charted somewhere in the 30s i think they were on standby in case someone dropped out)

Biffy Clyro still mention them in a lot of interviews as being a big influence.

Agree with a lot of the other suggestions here Turn especially, great ear for melody but I think the best thing they released was also the first (Check my Ears Ep).

Mark is playing regularly enough in Dublin and has his own website with some good tunes on it. Hillary had a kid but is planning a return to the industry but no idea what happened Fergal. Superb band.

Agree on Turn, absolutely love their stuff and they were great live. Two others of note are Melaton and Berkeley.

I did like quite a lot of stuff on the Emotional Fish CD - especially Lace Virginia - but if the demise of that band was the cost of getting Jerry Fish and the Mudbg Club, then I'll accept that.

One of, if not THE first band I saw at the first Witnness. Have most of their singles. Saw their complete ZTT recordings is up on itunes.

I'd also give a shout for The Young Offenders - never got to release their album after getting signed to Sony. Lead singer Ciaran McFeely eventually did OK as Simple Kid

I saw this crowd supporting Sonic Youth in the Olympia in 1998. I've never seen so many people do an about-turn to the bar. I'm not sure if they were going long at that stage, but it was like watching an Irish version of Shonen Knife. Just horrible.

Rollerskate Skinny were an amazing band.

Yeah that wasn't a good booking for them at all. They got abuse from the crowd and left early.

I was always a big fan of Revelino, felt they deserved a lot better. Rollerskate Skinny too. There was a while there when you could only get Horsedrawn Wishes secondhand. Even members of the band had no access to it and had to bootleg their own stuff if they wanted to give it to anyone. Thankfully it seems to have been rereleased.

I saw the Marbles live in a small pub in Castlebar many years ago, they were pretty damn impressive live. The guitarist used to play in his bare feet didn't he?

Really? I thought they had signed to a fairly big label after Shoulder Voices, but I'm probably wrong. Actually, you're dead right, now that I think of it, I remember picking up Horsedrawn Wishes for 2 dollars in Boston in 1996 - I couldn't find it anywhere else.

I think they played Lollapalooza too, I can't imagine them going down too well with American Beavis and Butthead skate shorts brigade.

I still have their first few EPs on 10 inch vinyl, they're brilliant.

The Blades were a great singles band and were the Irish "The Jam"

There was another band from Dublin who had a song "The Bridge" -one of them was Eamonn Andrews son. Goths I think.

Up to recently even it was hard to find. I worked with the guitarist about four years ago on something and he said he couldn't even get him himself at that stage. I had just bought it 2nd hand from some guy in the States. You can get it new off amazon.co.uk now though so it must have been reissued.

Say what you like about Tom Dunne, but SH had some cracking songs. Stuff like Forget Georgia, Burn Clear, Daisyhead, I Feel Good, Crystal Ballroom....
