have upgraded the laptop from 512 to 1.5g using store bought ram. CPU-Z says to use PC2 5300 sodimms. When I boot the laptop the screen gets liney and it won't boot windows.

The laptop is a HP celeron single core yoke (HP 530) Anyone any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Stuck the new ram into slot position one and tried the old ram in slot position two. Same thing happened! Removed the ram from slot two and it boots fine........... Is there a problem wwith slot two I wonder?

The new ram you bought could be faulty - so be sure you held onto your receipt!

Is there a "memory testing feature" in your boot options? There are loads of them available for free if you google a bit. Often they're available in the boot options of live cd versions of linux. That should show if the ram is faulty.

I actually returned ram this morning because I thought it was faulty. Now that I have the replacement ram in slot one the laptop boots away fine. I just can't get slot two to work with the ram that was originally in the machine now.

HP screen comes on in boot up and recognises the new ram fine in both slots alright......... I must be doing something wrong!

Did you try "old ram in slot 2 - nothing in slot 1" ?
if nothing happens then its the slot, if not its the new ram module.

Old RAM not working at all now?

Its possible that you damaged it when moving it around.
it takes very little static electricity to damage a RAM module.

    Story so far.........

    Slot 1 512m *no boot
    Slot 2 1024m

    Slot 1 512m *boot
    Slot 2

    Slot 1 1024m *boot
    Slot 2

    Slot 1 1024m *no boot
    Slot 2 512m

As I said did you try

    slot 1 - nothing
    slot 2 - 512 or 1024

The system Does not "need" to have a RAM module in the first slot in order to work.

If nothing happens with either the 512 or the 1024 module only in slot 2.
then i would say that it its the slot that is damaged.

But some systems also have trouble with using to different RAM modules together e.i a 512 and a 1024 module.
This is most true with systems using "dual" channel slots.

Thanks again all. Just running spybot. Will try booting on slot two when complete. If it works I can go ahead and fit more ram.

(Still bluddy slow and windows task manager says it's still page filing. I guess it's sharing ram to run video controllers.)
