New film club in Bray

    Hi all,

just to let you know that I have started a new film club in Bray. It is called Kinoteka and screens foreign language cinema classics with English subtitles.

Kinoteka takes place once a month on Tuesdays in the Harbour Bar and is free, because the films are sponsored by the international cultural institutes based in Dublin (so far, Goethe Institut, Instituto Cervantes and Alliance Francaise have signed up).

The next screening is on Tuesday, 8 February at 8:30 pm.

We are showing "Cría cuervos" (Raise ravens) by Carlos Saura (Spain, 1976), sponsored by the Instituto Cervantes Dublin, featuring Geraldine Chaplin and Ana Torrent.

Saura, well-known for his allegorical films dissecting and condemning the Franco dictatorship, made this film in the dying months of Franco's regime. It tells the story of how eight-year-old Ana believes she has the power to kill and uses this to rid herself of her authoritarian father and offers to alleviate the suffering of her grandmother. Ana's way of dealing with death and loss was widely perceived at the time of the release as an allegory of how the "children of Franco" might react to life after the dictator but the film is also a poetic exploration of the loss of childhood innocence in general.

More information on the film can be found on the Kinoteka Bray Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Kinoteka-Bray/153291481381098) or on our website (Kinoteka-Bray.tumblr.com).

If you are interested, please come along,

    thanks,

    Patrick

Have been lazy about posting here, but there is another film coming up. It's free, it's in the Harbour Bar and all welcome.

To celebrate summer (at least in our minds) and to remind us what it is like when you are young and the only thing you have are words to impress the world, Kinoteka is showing Richard Linklater's "Before Sunrise" (1995) . A giddy, near-realtime walk through Vienna. Two strangers meet on the train and spend the night together exploring a city together they don't know before they are supposed to part the next morning.

Ethan Hawke and July Delpy meet and talk. And talk. All night long, before he has to leave on a plane. Sounds pretentious, but is beautiful. Think "Brief encounter" with a lot less grief and in colour.

the movies are chosen a few weeks in advance, there will be a summer break in August but back in September. More information on the upcoming films on the website or the Facebook group

It's normally in the backroom of the Harbour and you can have drinks during the film. Weather-depending might try an outdoor screening but not looking too good at the moment.

    See you there.

Tuesday, 13 September, 8:30 pm, Harbour Bar, free entry.

Kinoteka is returning to it's Scottish roots with the next screening. "Morvern Callar" by Lynne Ramsay is a visually stunning roadmovie taking Morvern (Samantha Morton), the hero, out of freezing Oban into the light.
Morvern Callar works in a supermarket and gets by, with few ambitions and interests. Until she finds her boyfriend dead on Christmas day. Armed with his credit card and his unpublished novel, Morvern sets out to see the world.

With beautiful cinematography and an exceptional soundtrack featuring Aphex Twin, Velvet Underground and seventies prog rock giants Can, Lynne Ramsay takes you on a road trip from freezing Oban towards a new life.

Kinoteka is back with a bang with Clouzot's masterpiece!
The original action movie, featuring Yves Montand and Charles Vanel. Four unemployed men are hired by an unscrupulous oil company to deliver two truck loads of nitroglycerine to a remote oilfield. The only way to reach it is through a rocky jungle road. What could possibly go wrong?

Tonight at the Harbour Bar Bray, 8:30 pm and free as usual. Hope to see you there!

"Head-on" (Gegen die Wand), Fatih Akin, Germany 2004

Love will tear them apart again? Cahit, an angry alcoholic, ends up in hospital with whiplash, when his attempt to kill himself fails. There he meets Sibel, who has big problems of her own. She wants to marry him so she can get away from her domineering family and meet up with other men, he eventually takes pity on her and they settle for a routine of homely alcohol and drug binges, until Cahit becomes jealous and goes off the rails. Fatih Akin is one of the most exciting German directors around and with "Head-on" he takes you on a painful, powerful ride. (German and Turkish with English subtitles)

Hope to see you at the Harbour Bar, 8:30 pm on Tuesday 15 November
