    Hi everyone
Does anyone know of a book that gives an overview of the legal system suitable for the average joe. I'm interested in learning a little about the subject area but i don't want to spend a fortune or have to wade through hundreds of pages of text.

    Dave.

"The Irish Legal System" by Byrne and McCutcheon. Think the latest is the 4th edition.
You can probably pick one up cheaper on adverts.ie or in the fe1 books for sale thread in this forum.

Agree with ILS by Byrne and McCutcheon. It's cheaper than most Irish law books and the language is easy enough, but it's also quite large. Is there a particular area of the law you're interested in?

    Hi everyone
I had a quick look at ILS on amazon and it does seem a bit long. I was looking for somthing in the 200 to 300 page mark that was aimed at giving an overview of the law.

Principles of Irish Law: Brian Doolan perhaps? I have a copy here(7th ed) haven't got around to reading it yet so I cant vouch for its quality. Claims to be an introductory text on Irish law.

Seems to be a section for most topics,
    Irish Legal system
    Contract
    Criminal
    Torts
    Equity
    Land
    Family
    Business
    Employment

450 pages or there abouts. It seems you want to learn about Irish law rather than the actual system, which ILS would aim at.

hit the second hand books stores in your area, or even in the universities (usually in the students unions), you'll surely pick up a version of Principles of Irish Law for about €30-€40 or McCauley and McCutcheon for about €50-€60.

The second hand stores in town might have other less well known but cheaper relevant books.

If you want a REALLY short, yet highly comprehensive introduction to legal terms/the legal world in general - look to Glanville Williams - Learning the Law: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glanville-Williams-Learning-Law-L/dp/0421925507
