Central heating causes kinda gas smell in one room only!

I live in a newly built (5years) detached house in the countryside. We are the first occupants & bought the house fully finished. We have an ongoing problem in the front sitting room, only sometimes, when the heat comes on. There is a gas-type smell in this room only & the boiler is in the utility room (inside) behind the kitchen & spare bedroom which don't suffer from any odours.

It absolutely only occurs when the heat is turned on but, for example, all over the frosty weather at xmas the heat was on full blast most days, there was no smell & just yesterday & today the smell is back.

It has been an issue almost since day one but was so intermittant that I am reluctant to call out anyone as the smell is not consistant. I did initially think it may have been a dead mouse under the sitting room floor boards but after 5 years it should be well & truely gone unless its a family of kamikasee mice :). But seriously...Any Info or suggestions???

If it smells like Gas, get it checked out immediately. It could be something else, but you're much safer getting it checked to find out what it is and having it fixed.

Sorry, I should have mentioned...its oil heating & were green field rural so household gas can't be a factor, that is what is so confusing.

Presumably your Oil burner is using an internal chimney? Does your front sitting room have an open flue? fireplace? If so your flue gasses could be spilling down the sitting room flue.

Thanks for reply BillyB. Boiler is internal in utility room to the rear of house & ducted through the exterior wall at waist level, thats the highest point of the fumes outlet. Not much chance of it getting close to front room chimney. The utility room is concrete floor so I don't think there are fumes getting underfloor directly from boiler, but thanks anyway.

is there something caught in the fins at the back of the radiator
try using your heating with the radiator in that room turned off
otherwise take a floorboard up and have a look

Did you sort out this problem as I have similar smell in one room only after upgrading my oil heating system.
