    Hi,

I've recently got my full licence and am slowly driving further afield alone. I'm wondering can you turn right onto Eglinton Rd from Donnybrook Rd. I'll be heading to Donnybrook from the former but coming home in the dark I'd like to be prepared. I drove with a friend before but went home through Ranelagh. I've checked the satellite map and it doesn't look like you can make that right turn, I can see no filter lights nor a right turn arrow on the road. Thanks for your help

Do you mean turning right from Eglinton Road onto the N11 at Donnybrook, heading towards UCD/Wexford direction? You actually CAN turn right there. There are no filter lights, just a solid green 'circle' light as far as I can remember.

Sorry I completely misread your post there. No, as far as I know, you can't turn from the N11 at Donnybrook onto Eglinton Road. What about turning right onto Brookvale Road, which is the small road immediately before the Topaz?

Generally, you can turn right unless there are any signs prohibiting it, or the lanes are marked in such a way that doesn't allow for right turns (e.g. Left Turn Lane | Straight On | Straight On), or the traffic light displays an arrow only in the direction of allowed travel such that right isn't an option. Most commonly, all these conditions will be present.

This is exactly what i'd do in that situation tbh. Otherwise you're just going to have to turn back on yourself.

It's a good thing to know which junctions have turning restrictions. Before we got a Satnav, I used to plan out routes by just looking at maps and working backwards. However, what made it complicated is that I never considered turning restrictions. It's always unnerving arriving at a junction and not being able to turn right (when I want to turn right) but usually by just moving up to the next one and turning right there, I can get onto the road I wish to go to.

Even the Satnav can get it wrong at times, but it's rare. I remember one instance of the Satnav telling me to turn right somewhere (I can't remember where, we were near Clonliffe Road heading towards the East Link), but there was a no right turn sign. I was all set to go to the next junction when the right turn filter light came on :P
I suspect the sign was twisted in such a way that it wasn't actually intended for the people it was then pointing at :P

Google Street View is amazing, right? Alanstrainor linked you to it above - I use it all the time to get a feel for a road before I drive there, if I'm going somewhere strange. You can look at a top-down map for a while, but things can look very different at ground level. I've often got lost while cycling by making this mistake :o

    Hi,

Actually I had googled a map of the area before in preperation and while it looked like a no right turn I couldn't be sure.

The happy ending is I drove home via Belmont Ave straight onto the Sandford Road and it was even quicker.

Timbuk2, A satnav, at the moment, would be like another chattering voice in my head! Best do it the long way and keep the roads safer for now:D

    Thanks again.
