Samsung 2TB Internal Hard Disk £62.37 delivered

Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB 32MB 5400RPM 3.5 inch SATA-II Internal Internal Hard Drive from amazon.co.uk. This qualifies for their super free delivery offer.

The 5400RPM speed makes this drive ideal for NAS and Raid scenarios where efficient power consumption and less wear and tear are more important than throughput. Your NAS is always gonna be the bottle neck anyways so a lower RPM drive makes sense.

    Link

    EDIT:
    IMPORTANT NOTICE
This disk is part of the new trend towards 4K sectors. Some OS are not happy with that (XP older SP's etc). Also there have been reports of a chance of data loss or misreporting of bad sectors using either cache writes or smart technologies with this disk. Samsung has released a patch fix here.

Note, that the patch must be run in dos mode with the disk connected directly to the sata bus. You will need a bootable USB key or CD to run this.

The eco drives suffered with dodgy firmware, I'd check to see if there had been an update to it in the last 6 months.

    Veeeeeeeery tempting!
Got a 500GB drive which could do with being replaced with something cool and quiet

Perfect as a backup drive for videos etc as well

You should probably edit the thread title so people know it's for an internal drive.

That's a good deal, I bought one of these last month for €90 on Amazon.

You should probably keep your beak out. There is nothing wrong with the thread title, it states exactly what it is.

There was no need to comment on this. People just love to stick their oar in for the sake of it.

Big thanks to the OP - I nearly ordered four of these yesteerday from aria PC in the Uk, they are £68.99 there and you have to pay about €15 shipping to Ireland too.

Bought one a few months ago for 110 quid... this is a great deal... need to replace a 1tb disc - might buy one of these..

Saw the same drive for the same price on dabs yesterday if folks want an alternative. Not sure about shipping costs from Dabs.

I've been using these since Mark 1 version, never an issue, used in day to day general use PC, a HTPC and DAS, have eleven 1.5TB and 2TB at the minute and would purchase another without hesistation.
    Fantastic price.

I was only pointing out that it doesn't say that it's an internal HD in the thread title. If it did mention it, then people, like me, wouldn't click into it think it was.

Excuse me for trying to make a sensible suggestion to save some people a few seconds of their day, so kindly adjust the attitude.

No need to be so rude about it. It seems like a reasonable suggestion to me.

I clicked on this, and then went searching on Amazon. If I knew it was internal, I wouldve skipped over it.

You had to critisise his post even though there was nothing wrong with it. Its not the OP's fault that you assumed it was external. A hard drive is a hard drive, and an external hard drive is something different. He just said hard drive, which indeed it was. Nothing wrong with the title, but you spot a chance to criticise and up your post count. Well done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭maglite

The OP is totally in the right, the omission of the word external, Desktop and Portable should indicate what it was. The OP can not be held responsible for your assumptions.

A normal Hard Drive shouldn't need to be labled "internal".

Calm down "nordine" ... he was not criticising but simply making a suggestion.

I didn't criticize the post and i thought it was an external initially. I'd really love to know why people get so snappy about things on forums...like some cosmic counter is going '+1 for shouting at some guy on a forum for making a reasonable suggestion'

I've had this drive in my shopping basket for the last 2 months. Every time I go to buy it, the price goes down. Just one more week I tell myself :p It's £61.94 at the moment

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 60 ✭✭Jurisprudence

I have 4 of these. Working nicely so far but only been 2 weeks installed, extremely quiet drives. Just please be aware that they are newer AF 4K drives emulating older 512kb models and may have issues with some OS'es out of the box. Google is your friend.

Samsung have a firmware update for them and an alignment tool if needed for your OS. The firmware update addresses a potential fallover of the drive (possible data loss) if the drive is repeatedly polled for SMART data (rare but don't risk it). For people using WHS or looking for more info on firmware etc intending to use these drives there are threads on wegotserved.com which outline everything you'll need to know. Cheers to the OP for spotting the deal, could be tempted for 4 more:)

So its an external enclosure or caddy with an internal drive then.

Be wary of those PSUs they ship with those USB/HDD adapters. I've seen a good few and I wouldn't leave any of them plugged in for a long duration.

Thanks OP, I've ordered 2 :D Will do as a nice upgrade in my RAID-0 config

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Arciphel

O ordered three of these last week, they arrived today. Amazon only sent me two of the Samsung 2Tb drives, the other one was a Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB drive (which has 64MB cache instead of the 32MB found on the Samsung drive) so I am happy.

    Got mine yesterday as well.
Making a bootable USB dos deelio was a bit of a pain in the arse, but the firmware upgrade itself went through fine... (just make sure you unplug all other drives first!)

Tis a surprisingly decent performer for a 5400rpm drive... Absolutely wipes the floor with my 2 older Seagate Barracudas which it is replacing, and compares nicely with my existing Spinpoint F1 and F3

I seem to be in a bit of trouble with these drives. I have become aware that I need to upgrade the firmware. Samsung have released a patch tool that can only be run in native dos. So I have made a bootable USB drive with the utility on it. However...
I only have a laptop and a QNAP NAS. I have no PC into which I can place these disks. My laptop lacks an eSata port. I have tried a StarTech ExpressCard Sata controller to talk to the disk but it does not work unless in windows.

So how do I patch these drives? Do I need to ask someone with a PC for help? I'll post a request for help over in Computers & Technology and see how I get on.

Talk about a rock and a hard place.

Lads, as a caveat to the bargain alert,as I said I ordered three of these and they shipped me (from their Dublin 17 warehouse) two Samsung drives and one Western Digital Caviar Green drive. Now I was happy because the WD drive has a 64MB cache and hs more expensive, so I thought I had doone better out of the deal. Well, the WD drive stopped working last night after approx 4 hours use. I had copied all my photos onto it using Micorsoft SyncToy, good thing I havdn't wiped the original drive or I would have been sunk. Anyway, my order came in a normal box also, the two Samsung drives were in plastic caddies and shrink wrapped onto cardboard inlays so they wouldn't move around during shipping, but the WD drive that is now banjaxed was just stuffed into the side of the box, standing up, so any impacts or knocks the box got would have been transferred straight onto the drive.

I have returned the WD drive to Amazon in the Uk today, as it was not as described on the website (i.e. a different maker and model) I can get a refund, but if I went after it from the faulty point of view I think you can only opt for a replacement, and you have to pay for another unit and you only get the refund for the first unit back once they receive it and do an RMA to verify it is faulty. They also reserve the right on computer products to charge you a "DOA re-stocking fee" for any item which is faulty when it arrives to you, sounds slightly illegal to me?

So I would advise anyone who got a badly packaged HDD to be very carefull, keep an eye on it and test it thoroughly before you start putting important data on it. I'd also take a photograph of the item as it arrived to you in the box, unfortunately I didn't do this with mine. Lastly, I would fire off an e-mail to Amazon now saying you were unhappy with the packaging and that in the event of problems developing that you expect them to offer you over and above their standard 30 day protection on this item.

I took a few shots after the postie delivered the package. ;)

Tbh, I'd be amazed if they come out unscathed. A mechanical hdd doesn't need much mishandling to render it f**ked. Any hdd that I'd bought from Amazon prior to this was shipped/packaged correctly in a reasonably large cardboard box with proper foam inserts.

+1 for the "arrived in ****e packaging"

Copied around 600GB of stuff onto mine the the write speeds dropped to under 1MB/s, ran a thorough chkdsk and that hung on a file... Checked it using Samsung's estool and that reported a ****load of bad sectors, so tis on the way back to Amazon now...
I'd advise anybody who receives theirs and is worried about the packaging to update the firmware, then run a full scan with estool (both have to be done via dos - pm me if you want some more info)
If it reports any errors, send it right back!!!

Prolly better off sending directly to Samsung though... (They make you pay for shipping, but at least you know the replacement will be packaged properly!)

Depends on the application of the drives. Mine were/are for a htpc where speed isn't a huge requirement. ;)

Thats their new "Frustration Free" packaging .Its a disgrace .
It might be suitable for certain products but its grossly unacceptable for almost any electronic item .
Only but "Traditional Packaging" items .

    Two quick questions:
    1. The hdd in the link isn't sold by Amazon, and is priced at over £66.50. Is it definitely the same one that everyone has ordered? When I search for one sold by Amazon, it says " normally ships between 1 and 2 months" ?!

    2. Would this be suitable for a media player playing Bluray rips?
