Just put a deposit down one yesterday, 45k miles on the clock

Scanned around for problems but car seems ok, had its epb changed but this seems to be a common problem with them so not too worried,

just throwing it open for opinion/criticism?

any last minute advice on it?

Terrible engine OP. They are dog slow and heavy on petrol.

Love the asking for advice after the event.

OP if you're happy with the car and the deal whatever anybody says makes no difference. Enjoy the car when you get it!

    HAHAHAHA took the words . . . .

I was quite chuffed with myself until i read that!!!

She seemed like a great idea at the time

Sorry for being so blunt! The 08 1.4 TSI is a way better car OP. There was one on Donedeal for 11k last week.

    Appreciate the honesty!!!

But going to stick with it, I do still believe I got a good deal on it so happy enough.

I was really just curious if there were anymore issues like the epb

Depending on your driving the FSi isn't the worst.

I'm a boring accountant! no rally skills or aspirations here so hopefully it'll work out fine!!

There is no other issues. The earlier 05 models had problems with the handbrake and steering but the 07 models are ok. The mileage is low. I am used to driving bigger cars so that is why I think it lacks power.

yeah i'm moving up from an old focus, so this should be like a roadster

Hardly when you consider how much more weight the car has to pull around with a small engine.

I consider my TDI to be slow

Best of luck with it. Is it the Comfortline model you got??. Nice come up from a 1.4 Focus.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

It's a lighter car than the B5 Passat and same power as the 2 litre in that model. Not too bad for the weight, and the six speed box will help it in that respect with more closely stacked ratios. Like I said if you're happy...

    Yeah comfortline,

    Cheers

    Used to own one.

The 1.6FSI engine is a dog. It revs (and sounds) like a diesel, and getting it up to motorway speeds is unbelievable painful.

It is also unrefined, with a creaking cheap plastic interior will leave you wondering what the whole VW thing is about!

I was in denial for quite a while before I admitted to myself that I actually hated the car.

    Happy motoring :)

Hubby bought one last year and loves it... he will never get rid of it!

I know that he got the timimg belt done as part of the sale as it can work out quite expensive though. It might be worth asking them to do this for you!

    Enjoy!:)

I'm considering buying one myself & took one for a spin today. Same model/yr/millage approx as yours. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of alloy's - thought it took something off the look.

Am hoping to have a look at the highline model tomorrow.

If you don't mind me asking, what price is it?

originally marked up as 10000, what garage did you test drive, just hope it wasnt mine!! i'm not collecting it til next wednesday!!

    Hi there,

I test drove a 2007 VW Passat 1.6 FSI during the weekend. The car is awesome. The mileage on the car is 78000 kilometers. As you know it is a petrol version. I just have a question regarding the chain. The guy told it's chain is changed after 300,000 kilometers. I am not sure if this is right.

Can someone who has knowledge of chains shed some light on my query please?

After how many kilometers do we change the chain?

I have put some money as deposit.

    Thanks,
    Suri

Not sure to be honest, a quick phone call to your local VW dealer should be able to confirm it for you.

Chains don't usually need changing unless something goes wrong. Service it regularly and keep an eye on the oil and you may never need to do anything with the chain.

The 1.6 fsi is a very heavy drinker and indeed sounds and feels like a diesel at 85k km. Doesnt like to rev at all. Relative has one in a golf auto. Not great at all tbh I would get rid of the car if it was mine.

Well, I was reading this thread before I bought my vw passat 1.6fsi, driving it for last few days now, mostly city, it turns out very good on petrol, bit of scary when I filled up the 70L tank though as it costs me over 100 euro, I will update later on how it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 480 ✭✭C4Kid

    70L tank

Didn't think they had such a large tank :pac:

hahaha :D I did a little bit reverse engineering, so

    105 euro
    149 euro/L

which works out just over 0.7

    so 70 L :P

I have one of these and I often fantasise about parking it somewhere and a truck reversing over it and writing it off so i can claim off their insurance and get a good car.

    Hi All,

Thank god i looked here - I am looking for a new car and decided i wanted an 06/07 version of the Fsi.

I don't know too much about the car other than i liked it..

How much would you expect to be paying for an 06 or 07 avg 60,000m?

Is the concensus that this car is too heavy for a 1.6 petrol and is dog slow?

Would anybody be so bold to recommend a different car (Im not too fussy, looking for a big car but would be reluctant to go past 1.8).

The wife had an 06 1.6fsi passat for 2 years and tbh the realistic posters here have said it exactly how it is.....poor quality fit and finish inside and the engine has no torque and you have to go hard to merge with busy motorways and don't try to overtake unless you can see the horizon.

Ours was used for motorway commuting, where the 6 speedbox should be best but the economy was terrible. we replaced it with a 2.0 tonne, 2.5 turbo diesel 4x4 and the fuel costs for the same commute didn't change!!

I know a lad who had a 1.6 FSI Passat once. He died.

SIL has a 2007 1.6FSI estate auto. It is dog slow, but apart from that it's grand. Smooth, quiet, spacious, reliable in the 2 1/2 years she has it. It'd kill me to own it but hey, she doesn't like my car either.

Much better options out there. Even if you go up to a 08 Passat and get the 1.4 TSI engine.

1.4 TSi is more powerful than the 1.6 FSi it replaced. Also the 2008 Passats are alot more reliable than the 05 to 07 models.

Do FSI and TSI VWs suffer from carbon build up problems similar to GDIs in Mitsubishis?

    Lombardo86,

I bought an 07 Passat 1.6 FSI comfortline in Feb this year.

I had someone go through the full service VW history to query everything - didn't seem to be any problems.

I shopped around for a while and test drove some other cars but I liked the look and feel of the Passat.

For me, I needed a large boot, bigger engine (coming from a 1.1), solid / safe and comfortable car. I'll admit the Passat can be slow at times to get up to 120k but speed isn't a major issue for me - so I don't mind. It’s a family car for us.
    - it does feel like a tank a times with its size, slowness & heavy on juice

I was aware of the many issues with 06 & 07 Passats highlighted on this forum and over at www.passatworld.com/forums.
    - every car has issues on some level or another
I did encounter a known issue with the car not starting – the garage fixed it straight away as part of my 12 month Warranty, other than that I haven't had any problems.

Most of the guys on this forum know there stuff and will steer you in the right direction, I suggest continue with your research and know exactly what you’re buying.
For me, I’m happy with my purchase.

    Best of luck,
    LeNNoX

Interesting question. I've looked into this and in the US it seems to be a big problem. Doesn't seem to be such an issue over here. I think giving them a hard drive every so ofter helps clean the valves.

Likely more to do with the quality of fuel in The US versus Europe I'd say.

Ya that must be it. Apparently the VW504/507 oil is supposed to be better for it too. They don't use that for many engines in the US.

Thank you very much. I completely agree with you - I am actually checking one out tonight. It seems to fit what i want and to be honest i am in no rush (usually) on the roads and for the amount of cross country driving i do immediate need to overtake is limited

For some reason i am not allowed thank the post? But thanks for the honest response

Hi Lombardo86, I bought mine 06Dxxxxx few month ago for 10k, it had just about 30k miles on it. I would agree with everyone else, it's a heavy car, but for me the 1.6 fsi engine works just fine getting me to work, it took me few weeks to get used to drive it, as I was driving sporty focus.
