SCOTLAND A TEAM TO PLAY IRELAND WOLFHOUNDS ON FRIDAY 28 JANUARY AT NETHERDALE, GALASHIELS (KICK-OFF 7.30PM, ADMISSION FREE)
    15 Jim Thompson (Edinburgh)
    14 Hefin O’Hare (Glasgow Warriors)
    13 Ben Cairns (Edinburgh)
    12 John Houston (Edinburgh)
    11 Lee Jones (Edinburgh)
    10 David Blair (Edinburgh)
    9 Greig Laidlaw (captain) (Edinburgh)
    1 Jon Welsh (Glasgow Warriors)
    2 Dougie Hall (Glasgow Warriors)
    3 Geoff Cross (Edinburgh)
    4 Scott MacLeod (Edinburgh)
    5 Fraser McKenzie (Edinburgh)
    6 Ryan Wilson (Glasgow Warriors)
    8 Johnnie Beattie (Glasgow Warriors)
    7 Alan MacDonald (Edinburgh)

    SUBSTITUTES
    16 Fergus Thomson (Glasgow Warriors)
    17 Moray Low (Glasgow Warriors)
    18 Rob Harley (Glasgow Warriors)
    19 Roddy Grant (Edinburgh)
    20 Colin Gregor (Glasgow Warriors)
    21 Peter Murchie (Glasgow Warriors)
    22 Colin Shaw (Glasgow Warriors)

Johnnie Beattie wasn't eligible to play in the Heineken Cup so he plays for the As to get some gametime after a long spell out through injury.

I don't they look up to much but with an almost all Edinburgh backline they should be organised out wide.

The O2 Ireland Wolfhounds team to play Scotland ‘A’ in Netherdale this Friday, January 28th, has been named.

The team will be coached by Eric Elwood and Anthony Foley with Chris Henry named as captain.

Gavin Duffy moves from the Senior squad to the Wolfhounds and will start at fullback while Fergus McFadden has been called into the senior squad as cover with Ian Whitten replacing him for the trip to Scotland.

Ian Nagle will start for the Wolfhounds on Friday as both Donnacha Ryan and Dan Tuohy, named in the original squad, have been ruled out because of injury. He will be partnered in the second row by Devin Toner.

    O2 Ireland Wolfhounds Team & Replacements (v Scotland ‘A’, Friday, January 28th, Netherdale, 19:30):

    15. Gavin Duffy (Galwegians - Connacht)
    14. Johne Murphy (Young Munster - Munster)
    13. Eoin O'Malley (Old Belvedere - Leinster)
    12. Nevin Spence (Ballynahinch – Ulster)
    11. Denis Hurley (Cork Constitution - Munster)
    10. Ian Humphreys (Ballymena - Ulster)
    9. Tomás O’Leary (Dolphin – Munster)

    1. Brett Wilkinson (Galwegians - Connacht)
    2. Damien Varley (Garryowen - Munster)
    3. Tony Buckley (Shannon - Munster)
    4. Ian Nagle (Cork Constitution – Munster)
    5. Devin Toner (Lansdowne - Leinster)
    6. Kevin McLaughlin (St. Mary's College - Leinster)
    7. Willie Faloon (Ballynahinch - Ulster)
    8. Chris Henry (Ballymena - Ulster) Captain

    Replacements:
    16. Nigel Brady (Dungannon - Ulster)
    17. Jamie Hagan (Corinthians - Connacht)
    18. Andrew Browne (Galwegians – Connacht)
    19. Dominic Ryan (Lansdowne - Leinster)
    20. Isaac Boss (Terenure College - Leinster)
    21. Niall O'Connor (Belfast Harlequins - Ulster)
    22. Ian Whitten (Ballynahinch – Ulster)

Dominic Ryan should feel extremely pissed that McLaughlin has been selected ahead of him, evidence that form means little. Other than that you can't really argue with the lineup.

Buckley, TOL and Duffy in particular will be looking to have big games to press their case for selection in the Six Nations.

I'm very excited about the centres and the secondrow. Great to see Nagle in there (albeit through others being injured).

I think they had the A games on RTE.ie last year.

    My thoughts exactly.

Really hope they do have them this year, the chance to see Spence and O'Malley together in the centre and Nagle with a chance to show what he can do at a another level (and stick it to McGahan) has got me very excited about the Wolfhounds all of a sudden.

I was just about to ask about Nagle. Surely we have some 2nd rows who have played more than 1 game. Has he even played a ML game?

Whitten would have been a better choice. Spence has shown nothing to suggest he'll ever be a good 12.

edit: though I suppose Spence is the one with more of an international future ahead of him.

I'd guess that McLaughlin is more in need of the game time than Ryan to be fair.

for a fixture like this form isnt everything i.e. mclaughlin, nagle, and murphy (i mean murphy in the sense that he has been playing poorly for munster) starting

the bits of spence ive seen at 13 for ulster he hasn't looked too bad i thought.

big game for duffy with teh first team 15 jersey vacant at the mo, i hope he plays well.

Finally Declan Kidney starts looking to the future! I'm delighted with that team, hopefully if the set pieces hold up they will get the chance to play some free flowing attacking rugby, could be very exciting to watch.

He's played 4 Magners League games, picking up a MOTM in the Ulster game and possibly one in the Connacht game? Also got the MOTM against Australia.

Finally Declan Kidney starts looking to the future!

he has in the past used the A games for experimenting with players for the future, it is the one of the reasons for the A teams. this isnt something new for him.

    ireland A v scotland A in 2008:

Gavin Duffy; Andrew Trimble, Darren Cave, Keith Matthews, Mark McCrea; Jonathan Sexton, Eoin Reddan; Cian Healy, Sean Cronin, Mike Ross, Bob Casey (capt), Ryan Caldwell, Donnacha Ryan, Sean O'Brien, John Muldoon.

there is alot of young players in that team who looked very promising but not ready for the full seniors.

sexton, healy, cronin, and o brien were given the chance took it very well in that game.

lets be realistic and not go over board on the criticism of kidney. there is no prizes for being the most critical!

Wasn't McFadden originally in the A squad?

Injured or moved up to the full squad?

Full squad - has to be in with a serious shout for a spot in the XXII if not starting

  • Its disgraceful where they've put this game btw.

I live in Edinburgh now, and am a student, so no means of transport but public. Anyhoo, the pitch is at a rugby club which is a 2 hour bus journey away.

Considering Edinburgh is probably the hub of rugby in Scotland, this is terribly short sighted, I'll barely make it home from college in time to catch it on tv/internet (assuming BBC Alba will show it) let alone make a 4 /5 hour round trip to see it.

Rte.ie doesn't have this listed, neither does the Sky EPG for Rte, BBC Alba, STV, BBC 1 Scotland or BBC 2 Scotland. What a joke. I would really like to see this, and I know I'm not the only one.

This is part of the problem with rugby in Scotland - rarely are A games covered. If it was in Ireland either RTE or BBCNI would probably cover it as they have done in the past. Having said that next Friday's A game vs England Saxons has no TV coverage listed but I guess this is due to Wales vs England on at the same time and both BBC/RTE have contractual obligations to show all 6 nations matches live.

Yeah it's fair enough that RTE are covering the 6 Nations live on tv, but they could cover the A game online. Next friday they're streaming 2 games on rte.ie, the U20 game vs Italy and... the 6 Nations Wales vs England game. I think it's a bit of overkill to be showing Wales vs England on tv and online and not covering the A game at all.

At least this lack of TV coverage for home A games should not arise in forseeable future as 6 nations committee have now decreed that this will be the last season with Friday night 6 nations matches - so no clash for RTE/BBCNI.

would love to watch this game, RTE could at least show it via the RTE player.

why are people paying attrocious amounts for tv licences if they don't even bother covering or televising the up and coming rugby generation

    Sport brings low points.

Ireland seem to have Scotland in the tight.

Long injury for scotland here, nothing happening.

Its utterly one-eyed like John Rutherford used to be but yep, entertaining too.
Sounds like two blokes standing on the sideline at a sunday club game in the Borders.

Understandable given its BBC Scotland, and they are very complimentary toward us. Interesting to hear other people's opinions of Ireland Rugby.

I like the conversational nature of it.

  • The commentary is what I'd imagine commentary given by some of the regular posters to be like!

Just having the chats during a game, getting sidetracked with Tony Buckley issues, a few whinges about Jersey pulling.
