Unsolicited Election Mail

How does one stop this? Have not received any yet, but during the recent Donegal SW Bi Election I received a number of mailings to my parents address, dispite taking my name off the register there prior to the 2007 election. And wont be to ammused if I get any to either my current address or my parents this time around.

Am guessing it comes under data protection or something similar as I am always very careful to check or uncheck boxes as appropiate to not pass my details on to other parties.

Mods please move if inapropriate for this forum

    go to http://www.checktheregister.ie

check your entry, in particular the field that says Edited Register [** see below] :
If the value after Edited Register is "yes" it means that they can sell your information to various people - and I'd presume the political parties are among these. If it's no, then nobody can use your address.

This is incorrect. It was what I had also assumed and was surprised when I received the mail shots from parties in past elections. When I contacted the people that look afte the register they informed me that the political parties are allowed to use the register list for mailings. This box only covers direct mailing/marketing companies.

The problem is, is that you are registered to vote, and therefore this doesn't strictly qualify as marketing sh1te (even though it should). It's advising you of your options, and is specific to your constituency (usually). If you get preference calling there is usually an option for post, but I'm pretty sure that the political nonsense is not covered in that.

Best you can do is get a NO JUNK MAIL sticker and put it on your letter box or just put it back in the post return to sender. They'll sooner or later get the message!

If you were to return the mail without a stamp , who would have to pay for the postage ?

An Post automatically will return mail to the return address if you inform your postman. Just tell him it's an error or something and he'll mark it return to sender.
