Media player ... with subtitles from text file?

Herself's not Irish, so we watch TV with english subtitles on all the time, so she can hear and rear what's going on. We've discontinuted Sky Movies this month, and want to replace that with some sort of media player which will take divx movies for example, and play them on screen, overlaying subtitles that are in a text file in the folder with them.

This is easy to do on a PC with VLC, or a similar app, but do many media players support this?

Would not get a HDMI or vga cable and plug your laptop into the tv.
    or
Stream through a ps3 using 'PS3 media server'

If you want a stand alone device then XBMC supports just about anything, including proper subtitle support. So anything that can run XBMC would be my choice.

I want something integrated behind the TV, and not to have to worry about having 2 machines on for streaming.

Sweet! Didn't realise that. That makes life a bit more interesting so for me. Good to know!

Any of the higher end media players (e.g. Popcorn Hour) can do this. Subtitles may either be embedded in the media file or external in a .SRT file.

Doesnt need to be high end , Doesnt need to be XBMC , doesnt need to be anything special at all really , every single media player Ive seen can do this , probably the cheapest is the WDTV , it will do what you want.
