Can anybody tell me if it's possible to claim dole if I'm on unpaid leave of absence? I'd like to take a year out to pursue a personal project but am unsure if I can claim any sort of benefits? I suppose technically speaking I'm not in a position to receive jobseekers benefits/allowance etc ?

    Many thanks for any info.

No you cannot claim Jobseekers Benefit/Allowance as you are taking a leave of absence by your own choice. People on a career break are disqualified from claiming these benefits.

Hi, my sister is taking a year out from her university degree, does this mean that she is not eligible for the dole also?

If she is actively seeking work and can prove it then if she does not qualify for jsb then she can apply for jsa.

    No chance.

If you leave work, you can be disqualified from the dole for a period as decided by the welfare officer. The problem is, they will write to your previous employer to see if your job is still available - which it is. Given that the benefit is called "jobseekers allowance" and its clear that you found a job and decided not to take it, there is no chance at all of you receiving social welfare while working on your "personal project".

You might be eligible for a grant from the city/county enterprise board or Enterprise Ireland if they think it is such a great idea and will create employment or benefit the economy.

Ellen O123, if you sister is on a year out from uni and she is available for and looking for work, she should be able to claim the dole.
