so im going through hell at the moment with my audi. it started out when a belt snapped and needed a new head but turns out the "mechanic" was a *#*#* who tried screwing me over and wouldn't give back my car until i paid so with no choice had to pay him, few weeks later the car gets a recovery to another garage after my car sounded worse than a tractor! next thing you know i
had to change the engine in it and if that wasn't enough was told my ecu had been damaged and alot off wires were snipped (previous mechanic i blame here) so i found a 2nd hand ecu after 2 weeks searching spent weeks waiting for fella to reprogram it and all that den get the call yesterday morning that it's a dud and not gonna work (still have to pay him 200 on work carried out even though it won'y work) so my options are a) but new ecu which i £600+ from the north or b) chance another 2nd hand one for say €200
would anyone know why the ecu wouldn't work or any opinion on what i should do?? thanks in advance

The chances of the secondhand ecu being faulty is slim, unless it shows signs of water damage.
Was the ecu an exact part number match?

If the car ran (although badly) entering the second garage then it probably is due to what has been fitted or how its been fitted that the non start is now the issue.

Was engine code identical to original?

If the garage is able to condemn an ecu and unable to tell you why , then I wouldnt have a lot of faith in their work.

the ecu matched exactly but the guy who was working on it said he was having complications and done the immobiliser updated it and all that but just wouldnt work, when i found the engine it was same code etc but then the garage said they had problems with that too but managed to fix it. the guy working on the ecu doesnt work in the garage he's independent and i didnt get much of an explanation of him

Recently purchased a ford puma ecu from ebay delivered from the UK for £50 ( was quoted nearly €800 for one in dublin ) might be worth trying. I had no idea what to get but ordered one from seller 1stforford. Just gave him the exact code from the dodgy part. The first one he sent me went missing in transit but they were straight on it and sent a replacement straight away. They also guarantee all parts, and all are tested before posted.

i find it hard to believe the engine and ecu where f--ked ,and wire's cut ? think your 2 mechanic's are empty heads , why did you not bring the car back to the first man was there no warranty with his work.

So the problem is possibly that they wernt able to match the ecu to immo?

Should still start and die though.

Whats year, eng code? any ideas of fault codes after engine fitting?

I know it's an audi, you made that clear, I was just offering my experences of using ebay to buy a similar part to the one you need, I'm sure a quick search of ebay will show up someone doing the exact same thing for audi parts.

    Best of luck

On VAG cars the ecu is normally a sealed unit to protect the PCB (electronic board) from the elements and moisture. To disconnect it from the wiring loom you can simply unplug the loom from the ECU.

On this enclosure normally there is a sticker with the VAG part number and also the manufacture specific part number. If you ask you mechanic for this you can source the ECU for your self if you so wish.

This crowd are fairly well known:

Or if you want to repair the existing ECU:

I would be curious to see what wires were snipped being honest .

Why couldnt the mechanic re soldier the snipped wire(s) and use heatshrink to seal it?

I might be worth your while to drop the car to a specialist if your having this many problems.

I fail to see why they would have a problem with the immobilizer if they replaced the engine with the same engine code as the one the took out, I have changed a few of these over the years and never had a problem.:)

the snipped wires have been fixed just a case of the original mechanic bein a p***k its a long story with how he got the car in the first place wasnt intentional anyways with the ecu i think it was water damage because was few weeks after i got it back things went bust and my current mechanic said the ecu cover had been removed and played with (prob by the 1st so called mechanic) basically the first mechanic turned on me and made sure things went wrong

how long have you had the car ? you say the ecu had been opened I wonder was it chipped for more power at some stage I tend to steer well clear of anything that had the engine management messed with it usualy turnes into a nightmare.

I can well imagine any thing to do with electronics is expensive and that on top of having to get a second engine any way hope you get sorted ok
