It's better than it was, but that's about it.

The "search words" that people use make me laugh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭andyseadog

the 'quicksearch' people put at the end of their advert makes a total balls of it.

i searched for yaris the other day, in the first 20 cars, there was 2 yaris but lots of audi a4's and ford focus' from people who had put totally irrelevant, unsimilar cars into their search.

All they need to do is ban those ads featuring this easysearch rubbish, just have a little report button on these ads so they can be reported.

You can report it. And they do actually remove it.

www.gumtree.ie have a better search function and that's free. Can have a load of annoying ads for that reason though.

Yeah, the report button is handy, They even email you back to say they removed the keywords

All they need to do is "search Title only" or "search Title and description".

They sell a lot more things than cars, so carzone style might not work. But they could do a dam sight better if they tried.

There was a boardsie donnadonedeal who said that she was an employee and that there was a new search engine in development specifically to cut out the keywords nonsense. That was about a year ago though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,396 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

Its utter rubbish!!!!! Carzone is wayyy better, but no one wants to pay what, 40quid to sell a car. Its great on carzone the way I can narrow down my search to the likes of any auto diesel between 2000-2004 priced under 5k etc, no such thing on donedeal. Then all this ****e of muppets putting "audi golf bmw tdi vtec..." etc etc on an ad for a saxo ugh! If someone gets their act together and comes up with a website that is as cheap as donedeal, but you can search it like carzone they will do well!

In fairness its like a LUCKY DIP but for adults :D

I do like the way in Classic cars and other section you can keep an eye on the latest updates but the search facility itself is a load of rubbish

I've sent the link to this thread to Donedeal via their contact page. Hopefully they will have a read of this thread and maybe implement the "search titles only" suggestion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭ei9go

The search is so compromised by the lack of classifications and what ebay would call "keyword scam", I just don't look at the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭BnB

The search facility is certainly rubbish. But it is a great place to find a cheap car and to sell one too.

Its ads like this that screw it up...http://cars.donedeal.ie/find/cars/for-sale/Ireland/mondeo?source=all

He's selling 2 cars in the one ad and has listed out just about every car and van he can think of in the search text.

    Rubbish it is.

Type in Ford Fiesta into the search bar and a few cars down there's a Renault  (thats just one example)

Like everyone else I think a carzone/cbg type of search engine would be better, a section for cars that are crashed to bits would be of some help and a rule of some sort for people to include the mileage in the description.

2 different Corollas for sale in the ad, and the keywords are:

searh passat golf jetta bora tourag caddy transporter tdi avensis d-4d d4d corolla auris verso picnic camry a3 a4 a5 a6 320d 318d 525d s40 s60 c200 c220 is 220d vectra insignia astra mondeo tdci focus santa fe vitara l200 hilux navara dmax smax cmax galexy hiace transit 407 307 207 octavia superb trooper landcruiser msport s-line 2.0

And he manages to spell "search" (wtf?), "Touareg" and "Galaxy" wrong in his own spam text.. idot

It's a good search engine but people put a lot of **** in their advert that then show up, not the engine's fault imo.
I'd be willing to moderate their ads and just remove **** ads like that. Then find the poster and key their car :D

Btw, type "shit" into their search engine - it works!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,282 ✭✭✭BlackWizard

As biko said, the search engine functions fine. It is the users that fail the search engine.

If the advert is for a BMW then a customer should not allowed to abuse the system by adding in search words.

I tried to find my car on Donedeal once and I gave up after 5min. I don't think I'll bother with donedeal again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭metalgear2k2

I agree, not the engine, just how its used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I think people use it wrong more than anything. Donedeal have stopped putting in a List of makes eg. Audi, Bmw, Citreon.

You're allowed have two different makes in the add, like if you were selling an Audi you could put in "will swap for Volkswagen".

If people actually started typing in the make eg. Audi A4, rather than just A4 it would cut out alot of crap (not all of it though!)

    Hi guys!

Donna Marie is a different girl that has recently joined us with the rigney dolphin crew in waterford. I am the boardsi girl you guys were talking to and have been with DoneDeal for over 2 years now.

We are aware that this is an issue. I myself have spent hours trying to clear these search terms from our site. We have also included it in our terms and conditions that the use of these words is not allowed on our site. It is taking some time to clear all these ads from our site, but rest assured that we are working on it.

Also, our techie guy Declan, having successfully moved our server to cope with the amount traffic we have, has now the time to focus on our search facility. In the next few weeks our new search criteria information will be gathered when placing any new ads. We will also be contacting existing car ads to update the details in there ads so as to show in the new search engine when it launches in the very near future. We are aiming for the next month or 2.

When this is all in place, you will be able to search by make, model, year, price, transmission and fuel type. This will be available in our car section first, and will then be filtered through to other sections on our site. This new facility will make the use of quick search words in ads no longer an issue as search lists will not be sourced from text within the ad.

We really do understand how annoying the current search facility is and hope to have the brand spanking new one in place as soon as possible!

I look forward to searching for a 2009 diesel fridge with manual transmission. :pac:

I have to say that you guys have always been very responsive when it comes to dealing with reported adverts; far better than carzone.

Sorry for not clarifying that for you. These will be filtered through all the motor sections. Seems that's where most of the problems are with the search facility. Hope this helps.

    :D Really a beemer ?
It really depends what you looking at, we know anyway theres not many Zonda's for sale in Ireland, so in that case the "search engine" works great :)
I really hope something will be done with that problem, as we see even the poll results here, most people are not happy with that. But they (over 90%) might be wrong as well :P

Yep, that's very annoying. I suppose that the Alfa GT is a less common car, which seemed to filter out a lot of the nonsense adverts.

Every search seems to end up with something posing as an A4. I was originally looking for an A4 and got everything but.

Seems to be a certain "demographic" who feel the need to sell people cars that they don't want in the first place.

Search for "Z3" for example.. there is none of this carry on by the people posting these cars for sale!

But yes, the site needs a "search title only" or "search description" option as mentioned above.

i am always having to check carzone, donedeal etc. I want an E39 m sport, black or silver or imola red only, 2.5L, d reg, MANUAL, from 01+, ideally will have, mfsw, leather, climate control (although the mfsw + leather can be retrofitted so arent 100% essential. Looking for the above is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I wish I could just enter what I was looking for on a check list and be emailed or texted if a match came up.

Maybe if you narrowed down what you actually wanted, the spec you want is a needle in a hay stack in this country, not to mind on donedeal or carzone :L

Sorry to hear that BlackWizard, we know that it's an issue and we are filtering through the ads to remove all those search words.

On a more positive note, today the new place a car ad function has gone live. This means that when placing a car ad now, you must fill in the extra fields of make, model, fuel type, transmission etc. This is what we will source the new search lists from so stage one is now in place, the new search engine wont be long behind it. :D

Very disappointing response..... It has ruined a very good site for buyers and sellers....

I've bought 3 or 4 cars that I saw on donedeal and sold at least 3 on it in the last 2 years. I would hazard a guess many folk who complain about the search function are merely passing the time by surfing the site as opposed to looking to buy a car.
